2000 5.3 Silverado Died. Fuel Pump? Thoughts?

My guess is its the fuel pump. The truck has about 99,800 miles on it. I was driving down the road and it

started sputtering. I gave it more gas and it just sputtered worse. I pulled over and shut it off. I restarted

the truck and reved it and it immediatly died. I restarted it and then it died. and woulnt restart. After sitting

for about 10 mins it would restart but run rough and once i gave it gas it would die.

My guess is its the fuel pump becasue i cant hear it prime when i turn the key on and it was

getting loud. Especially when i was low on fuel.

When was the last time you changed the fuel filter?

 

Honestly i havnt done it. The previous owner did though. I should do it

but i dont think thats why the truck isnt running now. Then again i could be wrong.

A clogged fuel filter can cause the pump to fail. If the filter is clogged, it causes the pump to work harder cutting down on its life. The pump may of burned up and now needs replacing.

I agree with Draenor, i might have burned out, it may also have been caused if you run the truck with low levels of fuel, the fuel acts as a coolant of sort in the tank. mine went out a way back and just bought one off ebay ill post the link of the ebay store along with this post

These days it is not just a fuel pump, it is a "fuel system"!

 

There are various components to the fuel system which can be tested and then you can see what is working and what is not working. Or see if everything in the fuel system is working OK and it is some other problem.

So two ways to go about this.

 

1. Guess and start replacing parts. Maybe you will guess right?

 

2. Get a factory fuel and emissions service manual (service manual set - 4 books - order from GM dealer), then test each component. See what is working and what is not working. Then only replace/fix what is not working.

 

To me option 2 is the least expensive in the long run. It can cost around $150 for a factory service manual set, but then you are not replacing parts which don't need to be replaced, so a big savings in the long run.

Any other thoughts. It doesnt look like i have any fuel pressure. If i push on the schrader valver on the pass sides fuel

rail nothing happens. Should some fuel squirt out? I also get no fuel pump priming when i first turn the key on.

Well if you know the fuel pump should run a bit when the ignition is turned on and you have heard it do this in the past and it no longer does that - plus there is no fuel pressure...

 

Then the first thing I would check is any related fuses. Then I would look in the fuel and emissions manual or electrical diagram manual and see what I would need to do to test power to the fuel pump. Then do that. For example it might say to jumper a couple of connections somewhere or activate the key switch in a certain manner.

 

And I would also be looking for *which* connector to test (with a multimeter) and which color wires, etc.

 

Then if I saw the pump had power, but it was not working, then I would replace the pump. But I would also replace the fuel filter and check the other things in the fuel system. My thinking would be that perhaps something caused the fuel pump to go out, and I would want to check those other things to be sure they were OK.

 

(Preventative maintenance)

 

But most people are not as thorough as I am and would just guess and replace the fuel pump without doing any further testing.

 

So if you're a gambling sort, I would suppose there would be good "odds" that the pump was bad, but it would not be a sure bet without doing any sort of testing. :)

it's either fuel pressure regulator or the pump itself. Pretty much decided if you cannot hear the pump whine with the key on.

My dad's 2001 Suburban was recalled a few years back for faulty fuel pumps. I don't know if it applied to all 5.3 vehicles or just suburbans. May want to check it out with a dealer.

Yup. Its the pump. I hooked a meter and im getting 12 volts for about 3 secs for

the prime and when i crank it over im getting 12 volts so the pump is bad.

I bought this pump from this guy(world autoparts) on ebay also for my 99 Sierra-she fired right up. Super easy if you take the bed off-good luck.

    • I am having similar issues.. 08, 4.8L granted I did had a fender bender and minor damage up front passenger side but I don’t think it had anything to do with it.. I had the high and low pressure checked and my fan for my radiator keeps coming on.. replaced the pressure switch and don’t want to keep throwing parts at it. I did have some minor problems here and there like on long road trips sometimes the ac would get a little warm and then on the highway as soon as I give it a little gas or get a little heavier on the petal it started running cooler. Never had an issue with the ac besides the here and there.. but I also started having issues when I fuel up now it takes a bit to start ( super embarrassing) it runs fine and once started ( only happens after fueling up) starts fine any other time. Could they be related?
    • Spent a small fortune on fuel this weekend.   $6.69 diesel, 18 gallons of that. $6.99 92-octane ethanol free, 10 gallons of that for yard machines $5.59 87-octane for one of the cars, 11 gallons.   $250+ and I didn't even get a tug.   Hormuz ain't Hormuzin again, did not see that coming...LOL
    • Appreciate the advice. I've watched multiple videos. Most showing the most complex for those that have a center console, to one that showed maybe 2 pieces of trim being removed, like 6 screws, pulling back the screen and switch assembly, and installing the inline module. And this was a new/newer Silverado. That didn't look too bad. All the others show alot of trim pieces that need to be removed. I've broken those kind of tabs/clips on my C8 Corvette trying to get to the battery, and that was a lot less clips than what I think is involved here after watching multiple videos and looking at my dash today. I have one on the way. Called a reputable stereo place about installing it and got a "minimum" price of $175. Ouch! Looking forward to seeing what the instructions have to say.
    • Hard to say what the issue might be. Anything from the ability to cool the AC condenser up front, to blend door issues in the HVAC unit, to refrigerant charge, to compressor issues or issues in the lines.   Report back what the techs find on the 29th.   GM has service publications which list acceptable vent temperatures and AC pressures at given ambient temps and humidity. They probably won't touch the system if it's operating within those ranges.   I'm also surprised to hear your 2024 with the L8T is still using R134a? I was pretty sure the HD's had switched to the new refrigerant around 2020.
