Diff Between 4x4 And Z71

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, I am learning about these trucks, What is the difference between my 2004 Sierra 4X4 and 2004 Sierra Z71? Thanks

I believe the Z 71 has more skid plates underneath and larger or different shocks.

Mainly different shocks, some skid plates, and "Z71" decals in place of the "4x4" ones.

Also for '04 the G80 locking differential was standard with the Z71 pkg.

And isn't there a year or two (if not current) that Z71 didn't neccessarily mean you had 4-wheel drive? ie. there was a 2-wheel drive Z71.

Yep,The GMT900 pickups are available with the Z71 pkg. in both 2 and 4wd.

They also offered the GMT800 SUV's with the Z71 pkg. in both 2 and 4wd.

Let's not forget the Jounce bumpers and the larger stabilizer bar.

I thought all 4x4's came with skid plates? Mine has the same one.

Nope, but you can add them without getting the Z71 package.

Just as discussed in some posts above... Z-71 is an option with three components only and comes on 2WD or 4WD trucks:

1. Gas Shocks

2. Skid Plates

3. Z-71 Stickers

4Wheel Drive is a separate option entirely independent of the Z-71 Off Road package... although many newer trucks have both options and have Z-71/4X4 stickers......

obtw... 4x4 used to mean something different in a truck, from what it implies today....

True, depending on what year/platform it is,Thats the issue...different years/platforms had different items included.

BTW...Most people don't know you could get the Z71 pkg. on the S10's when they came out in '83. The option code later changed from Z71 to ZM6 on the S10's after the GMT400 platform was intrduced in '88.

Can't say about the 2004, but the 2009 shows this on Edmunds.com.

Z71 Off Road Package

Includes 1.81" shocks, off-road jounce bumpers, 34mm front stabilizer bar, high capacity air cleaner, skid plates and Z71 decals on rear quarters. REQUIRES (N56 or N87) and (QJM or QJP or QXN or QXQ).

One other thing I noted was that it doesn't show up as an option (on Edmunds.com) until you get to a LT trim level. The N56/N57 options are aluminum wheels and the Q-- options are all "off-road" tires.

....... or you can just go on ebay and buy a set of Z-71 stickers for $20 and make your truck look much cooler!
