Front Bumper - Fix Or Replace?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

Should I try to fix it, or replace it? Can find them on car-part.com. But if fixing is cheaper, while looking like it never happened, I am up for that.

These are urethane, right??

Depends how much the replacement is. There are compounds you can apply to the bumper to fix the cracks. Then all you have to do is sand it and paint it. It would probably cost you about $20-$30 to fix. If the replacement is under $100, then I'd go ahead and replace it.

Replace it. Once a fiberglass panel breaks, it is broken unless welded (with the plastic welder) back together. It would cost a whole lot more than $30 to fix. You need to take the entire bumper off, plastic weld it, fill it, fill it again, sand it, sand it again, then order the correct color paint, respray the entire thing, clear coat it, and put it back on the truck. A paint job/with clear would easily run $100-200 alone and that doesn't include body work at $40-60/hour. I would find a used one in a salvage yard, maybe even in the correct color and install it.

I'd replace it. I just got mine done a couple months ago, cost me $450.

Thanks Guys. They have lots on car-parts.com for under $300, so I think that is the way I will go.

My guess is you don't have the tools to fix the crack so a replacement from the junk yard or online auto parts store is your best bet. Get it unfinished and materials will cost you about $75 out the door from the body shop to put some color on it.

I know macco or one of those shops have $100 bumper specials sometimes...it may be worth a look to see what they charge for prep only (fix the crack). It's a bumper so you have some wiggle room on quality.
