For this problem I would suggest you take your vehicle to a GM dealer for service.

(Lots of electronics and electrical testing involved.)

we had a 02' Malibu that the security system armed itself about once a month. some times it took 2 or 3 tries to get it shut off. We finally just got rid of the thing.

Hello Mark,

I'm afraid that your likely going to need the security module replaced. Seemed to be a frequent problem with the 99-2003ish models. My previous company truck, a 2000 GMC Sierra had the same issue, the security light would come on and it would crank and act as though it were going to start but then die right away. A trip to the dealer and some troubleshooting by them led to them replacing the security module as well as a new set of keys. Some of the security systems have chips inside of the key as part of an Anti-theft device.

A factory service manual set for your year/model vehicle (which you can order from your GM dealer or Helm Inc.), would have a complete description of how this operates, wiring schematics, and detailed troubleshooting/replacement instructions. You could do some troubleshooting with a multimeter.
