Steering Noise And A/c

Recommended Posts

I have a 2004 Z71 with 66K on the clock. I had the clunking problem fixed some time ago. Now I have a rubbing sound that occurs only in left turns. It is very audible and can also be felt in the steering wheel. Dealer wants $750 plus to fix. I see the posts on the intermediate steering shaft issues and seem to recall the parts price was less than $150? Is it reasonable for the labor to make up the balance of this?

Second issue: I have dual control A/C. Last weekend, it was very hot down south in Mississippi where I was visiting. Out of the blue, the driver's side began blowing heated air like is was dead of winter and wife was getting all the A/C on her side. We finally turned it off and rode with windows down. Over night, it healed itself ... until the next time I try to use then who knows. Dealer wants $500 to fix the controls to the "temp door" or something like that? I have been hearing a vacuum sound in the truck for some time and suspect this is the culprit. Has anyone pulled their dash apart and tried to fix on their own? Could it be merely a vacuum leak or some foreign mfg GM sensor causing this to happen?

First Issue: Rubbing sound not typical with intermediate shaft, clunking is more of an intermediate shaft issue. Where does the rubbing sound seam to come from, in the column or under the dash.

Second Issue: Intermittent but common problem, HVAC control board issue which is integrated into the HVAC controller is the issue. Mine did this a couple time, purchased a new controller and issue hasn't come back.

I agree with tramz that you don't typically get a rubbing noise from the intermediate shaft, but more like a knock or clunk especially while making a turn. You should take a look under the dash to make sure nothing is rubbing against the shaft. You might try jacking the front wheels off the ground and then have someone turn the wheel while you look and listen for the noise.

BTW I just replaced my intermediate steering shaft yesterday in my driveway (~1hr) with simple hand tools. I ordered the Dorman aftermarket intermediate steering shaft from Rockauto for $45 plus shipping and I'm quite happy with it so far. I was quoted $92 + tax from my dealer for the GM replacement shaft p/n 19153614, but since I have read good reviews on Dorman shaft on this site and it was 1/2 the cost of the GM shaft I went with the Dorman product. BTW, I had to remove the gas pedal assembly (two 10mm bolts & three 10mm nuts) to get enough room to remove the steering shaft from the inside of the cab.

Thanks fellows. The odd thing is that it only makes the noise in slow left turns of the wheel and you can feel it through the steering wheel?

Does the noise occur when at the stops or limits of turning? Does it stop when the vehicle stops? Sounds like it might be drivetrain/wheel/tire related - if it stops when vehicle stops.

Is this the correct part?

Mine has been making noise for about 6months now and is driving me nuts! I just have not been sure what to replace it with.

I tried the link you posted, but it told me the session had timed out and no part was displayed. The Dorman intermediate shaft I used was p/n 425-176 and was $45.79 + shipping.

Has anyone found what was causing the rubbing sound? My truck is making the sound with slow left turns also. Just fixed the knock with the new part number intermediate steering shaft.
