Hid 5202 Fog Lights

I put one side in and I'm still messing around trying to tidy up all the extra harness they give you in Spencer's HID kit. But I turned them on and was very surprized by the brightness even in broad daylight about 11:00 am today, so I thought I'd shoot a picture head-on and show it. I'll leave one side stock to do some comparison tonight and the next few nights. I'll try to get some pics from the cab later this week.

I don't know if I'm doing the right thing here, taking the fogs and essentially making them high power driving lights, since we do have thick fog here on occasion and I could use some yellow foglights.

I look forward to the comparison. How were the stock fog lamps in heavy fog?

My truck did not come with fog lamps, and drive through alot of fog in the mountains. I am going to get the GM fog light kit....and was thinking of upgrading the bulbs to something better. Not sure if I want HID though.

Thanks for the comparison Chuck  I want to upgrade to HID's in my fog lights as I already have HID's for my low beams.

Scott, if you are going to spend the money on the fog kit and also have to drive through a lot of fog, go with some 3k hid's. It will make it worth the expense. The stock bulbs suck.

Nice! What color temp are those?

I'll be getting my fogs and lows from Spencer in 6K early this week, so I'll be interested to see how they come out looking.

Scott,

The stock bulbs are pretty low output. I'd say something like an old sealed beam pre-halogen, maybe weaker. I never encountered any real fog in the last 7 months that I've owned this truck, or if I did, I forgot I had foglights. Frankly, I've never driven with them. Sure I turned them on to try them out, but not for any driving. They were pretty anemic anyway.

I didn't have much time to fool with the lights tonight after shooting texture on drywall at my brother-in-law's. But I turned down a street along the airport tonight and drove it a ways. The light was obviously much much brighter on the side with the HID. More messing around and some pics to come later. Basically, the HID looks like a driving light with a very flat topped light pattern. It's hard to find a really dark area in LA to test. I'll find someplace and take a pic or two.

Charlie,

I forgot to mention, they are 5000 Kelvin. I really hate the blue/purple and wanted something just a bright white. On my 99, I bought some 4300 Kelvin HIDs for the low beams. Haven't installed them yet either. That's the hunt truck beater that sees more dark roads anyway.

After not working on the 08 HID installation in a week, I finally had time to get back to it. I installed the other side and took a couple pix.

The installation went well. I have the small Philips patent ballasts that fit anywhere. I elected to tie-wrap them to the splash shield. Just heated a screwdriver and pushed the blade thru in the locations I needed and slipped the tie-wraps in. I suppose it would have been better to move the ballasts up higher, but it's really the connections that are at risk for moisture.

Looks good! I'll have to take pics of my install tomorrow when I tear the front end off my truck to install the low beams :dunno:

Charlie,

Let me know how that goes. I bought some HID's for the 99 2500 and won't be able to install them until I get the truck back from my brother when he returns from a trip in a couple weeks.

I'm not sure, but I may get a set for my 08 low beams.

spurshot,

you will be wanting to get a set for your lows in your 08. My only deal is I wish that I would have got the 5k, the 6k has a little bit more blue to it than what I thought, but the lighting is still great!

Charlie,

I'm getting ready for a road trip at the end of Aug and decided to get some Silver Star Ultra's for the hi-beams. Driver side was easy enough. But the pax side was a pain in the arse. Couldn't reach it from any angle without disassembling something. Finally gave up and pulled the grill, took the lamp reflector assy loose and pulled it forward enough to get to the bulb.

I sorta feel like I'm gonna feel like an idiot when someone tells me the easy way.

Duffy,

I really like the pure white of the 5000k fogs I got. I bought 4300k HID lo-beams for the 99 truck.
