Hids Installed, H11 Lows And 880 Bulbs In Foglights On Nbs

Ordered H11 bulb (6000k) HIDs for the lows and 880 bulb (6000k) HIDs for the fog lights on the 4th of January from vvme.com, received them today  The complete install took about and hour. I'll start with the fog lights. Here are the kits that were sent.

Once out of the box I checked out the directions, there pretty basic. I did realize that the connectors from the factory harness to the HID input wires where not going to work... there is an easy solution to this problem. The HID bulb does have a nice fit into the factory housing though. So here are the steps i took in replacing the fog lights to HID.

- Hook bulb connectors to ballast connectors (Red to red, black to black).

- Hook power supply connector from bulb to ballast (red wire to positive sign on ballast, black to negative)

- The two remain wires are the ones that will connect to you factory wire harness.

This is a test fit to see if all wires are hooked up properly and the light works, note the HID wires that connect into your factory harness connector. These interlocking connectors are to large to fit into the stock harness connector and secure (there is no adapter to plug into the factory harness.) On the H11 kit it is the same way, you can however plug the connectors into the stock harness and secure them. I will simply splice the power and ground wires from the HID kit into the stock harness with crimp-on butt connectors.

- Splice the red HID wire to the purple OEM harness with a crimp-on butt connector.

- Splice the black HID wire to the black OEM harness with a crimp-on butt connector.

- Add a few drops on 2 min. epoxy to the outer edges of the HID bulb socket and install the HID bulb into the factory housing.

- Seal up the housing connection area with clear silicon to ensure water tightness.

I decided to use double sided industrial strength Velcro to secure the ballasts to the truck (I've used this method in the past and has worked for 2 years now)

- Mount ballast just above fog light housing and zip-tie wires to secure them, this is the best spot i found. You can however use the supplied brackets and mount them anywhere you would like.

I know this upgrade will be well worth the $130 i spent on the 2 kits. The H11 HID low install is basically the same but the power wire from the factory harness is yellow and the ground is black. So red to yellow and black to black. Just a tip that might help with the passenger side install, I removed the air box cover to give me a tad more room to work, it wasn't much but i got the job done. I also adjusted the driving lights 5 full turns down to compensate for the HIDs and not to blind people when driving. Hope all this helps.

Here's an updated pic of the Z with Go-Rino step bars, 35% tint and 50 Series SUV Flowmasters angled out. Next up, my pioneer AVIC F90BT that just arrived today.

Maybe I'm simple or I just didn't read it correctly but I have a question

Did you actually use the stock connector or did you just splice a couple wires into the OEM harness?

I spliced the wires from the HID harness to the OEM harness wires (cut OEM connector off, and connector pins on HID kit) I know the 880's are not made for the fogs per say so this is the route i had to take (2 splices). Even in the H11 kit its the same way ( connector pins from the HID harness just plug into the OEM connector) i feel the H11 kit should have at least came with a OEM style connector for the HID harness to make it plug and play into the factory harness, I know the same style kit for the fog lights on vette had this OEM connector in the kit allowing it to plug into the factory harness. (different company) hope that makes sense Buck

Does flash to pass work properly?

Flash to pass works fine and i removed the Day time running lamp fuses so the HIDs are not on all the time at low power (read this will cause issues) I also read the Auto light feature should not be a concern...

Thanks for sharing.

I'm waiting until spring and then installing HID's in my current truck. Had them in my last truck and really miss this HIDs.

not the greatest camera for night shots but here is one at dusk... the Fog lights really add to the light output.

Good job on the write-up and installation Mike.

Can you let us know if you run into any overheat problems with the fogs after extended period running them? Someone else did a 9005 installation in the factory fog housings and did get some heat damage.

The factory fogs seem pretty anemic. I would go for a fog light mod on my new 1500.

Personally, I like my factory low beams as they are. But I would go for the high beam HID or other high output bulb. Can't have too much light on the high beams. Although I used to drive a 6 volt Volkswagon many many moons ago, so a new style krypton bulb flashlight looks bright to me. :uhoh:

I did the mod originally and had no problems. The problems that were had were by Yukon and Tahoe owners with the much smaller housings. The HID's aren't as hot as the halogens so these should be trouble free in the larger Silverado/Sierra housings.
