Installing Hid Head Lights And Fog Lights

Recommended Posts

I have a set of HID's to install headlights and fogs, I am not sure what else there is to be done with installing these. I have been told to dissconect the daytime running lights, bu I am not sure how to do that. Does anybody know how to disconnect the DRL's on a 2005 GMC Sierra? Also is there anything else that I should be doing or do to my truck besides the DRL's. PLease let me know if anybody has any input.

Thanks

Not sure about your year truck but on the 2007/2008's most people just pull the fuse. I did mine and it worked great. I still have the auto lights, just no DRL.

This might be an option for you. Give it a try....

Let us know....

In 2005, the DRL are seperate bulbs are they not ? I know for sure on my 2002 they are.

If so, no need to disconnect the DRL.

However, if your DRL use the low-beam lights, then you will have to turn off the DRL.

Not sure about your year but in my 07 I just put them in as you would any HID kit I didn't pull fuses or anything. the DRL don't come one when you have HID becuase It's not enough power running through the ballast.

I have read it is not good for the lights to turn on and off, but i park in a garage, and when i start my truck my lights sometimes come on then i back out and they will turn off during the day, is there something I should do about that, if you should not flash the lights on and off. I just want to make these lights last as long as I can, please let me know.

Thanks

tpepp I think you're right on that. The DRL's don't have anything to do with that, it's the Auto lighting that does that. I'm not sure what you can do to disable the auto light function.

use the same method that is included in the police package, stick a resistor in the line with the sensor, and this will disable the auto-lights......

Condition/Concern:

**** THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO U.S. VEHICLES ONLY ****

All requests for Daytime Running Lamps (DRL) disable are to be referred to Techline Customer Support Center (TCSC). Instruction about vehicle qualifications and requirements for DRL disable will be provided by TCSC. TCSC is GM's central record keeping location for all of these requests. TCSC toll free number is 1-800 828-6860.

**** THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO U.S. VEHICLES ONLY ****

Requests for DRL/auto headlamp disconnects must be made by appropriate agencies. The vehicle in question must be owned by a law enforcement agency, military agency or security company. (City/State, Sheriff, FBI, CIA, DEA, Emergency Vehicles.Etc.) It is recommended the dealership obtain a letter on the agencies letterhead requesting the DRLS/auto headlamps be disabled. The letter should contain the specific vehicle identification number which will be disabled, and a statement which reads, "the DRL/auto headlamp system will be made fully operational prior to disposal/sale of the vehicle." the letter should be kept in the vehicle service file at the dealership.

Recommendation/Instructions:

Procedures to disable daytime running lamps (DRL):

Have the dealership technician call Techline at 1-800-828-6860 and request a new calibration for the truck body control module (tbcm) that will disable the DRL's. Recalibrate the TBCM with the new calibration.

Procedures to disable to auto headlamps:

Unplug the ambient light sensor and put a 600 ohm resistor in place of the sensor. The resistor will command the TBCM to turn the auto headlamps off. The headlights will now have to be manually turned on with the headlight switch.

Secure the resistor and connector to prevent rattles.etc.

Note: Vehicles equipped with Automatic HVAC (RPO CJ2) may have a light sensor that also includes the sunload sensor for the HVAC system. Make sure the resistor is wired into the ambient light sensor signal wire (Circuit 278) and ground (Circuit 1851). This can be achieved by backing out pin 2 at the light sensor and removing the terminal and adding the resistor to the wire and then splicing the other end of the resistor to the ground wire 2 inches from the light sensor.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

Keep in mind that if you try to have the dealership do this, they will say no since nobody here would be able to submit a govt letter stating that the vehicle is govt owned. Just means that you have to do it yourself...... If you break something, good luck fixing it......as it says above, the TBCM may have to be redone, but it will not be done unless a letter is presented to the dealership from a govt entity....if anybody does it, let us know how it went....

Mike... Does this procedure apply to 05s for disabling the auto on?? I've seen some other sites say use a 1.5k resistor, and this says 600. How much difference does it make?

On another note... I see you are looking into getting rims. I might be interested in your stockers. Let me know. Thanks!

If you don't want to mess with the ambient sensor, you could always just turn the parking lights on before you start the truck. I don't have HID's but I do this anyway cuz I hate having the headlights on in the garage. After awhile it just becomes habit.

Makes sense, but I just want to defeat it. I already defeated the DRLs, so this is next. I hate vehicles that think for me! If I want to turn on my lights, I know where the damn switch is!

I found another article that says just jump the two wires on the BCM that go to the sensor...no mention of a resistor.... :sigh: Do you need a resistor or not?

sorry guys...I have been driving around and trying to keep my foot out of it. The aforementioned TSB is the recommended procedure that GM advises FBI, PD, CIA and any other law enforcement agencies to disable the auto headlights. I would use the 600 ohm resistor, but if you dont want to do that, then just set the parking brake and that should take care of the problem.

It is my understanding that this applies to the ambient sensor system, which did not undergo a change.

I plan on throwing 20s on the truck for the summer and keeping the OEMs for the winter (not that I really need them since I am in Austin, but it never hurts to have a second set - sorry)
