Oil Consumption

For the first time since buying the truck new my oil level Engine message came on indicating my oil level is low. The last oil change was approx 5,000k and my oil level monitor show 39% oil life remaining. The truck only has 50,000 K and I was just wondering if it is normal to add some oil between oil changes.

thanks

I've never had the light come on, but I am always about a quart and a half low at oil changes. I've never owned a vehicle that uses oil like this truck does. From what I hear it's pretty normal. I still don't like it though.

thanks very much for your response. I know with my previous truck (2001 chevy Silv 1500HD Crew cab) I don't ever remember adding oil between oil changes. I guess these newer models like the oil!!!

One qt to 3000K is normal so your right on with normal oil usage.

One qt. to 3000 miles is "acceptable" as per chevy. I wouldnt say its normal. Although not enough to be concerned about. Maybe try a different oil?

A catch can for what? The 2004 & later have a fixed orifice PCV and allow very little crankcase oil through the PCV system.

Maybe try a different oil?

...or add a catch can.

I have an AFM engine and have been running Mobil 1 in it since 3,000 miles, I now have over 34,000 miles and my truck doesn't use any oil.

I switched over to Mobil-1 full synthetic this last go around. It was changed back in the last part of Dec. The past few days I've noticed blue smoke from the exhaust up until about 10 min after I crank the engine. It has been cold, but this didn't look like the usual exhaust from being cold. No oil leaks though. Truck has almost 40k miles.

My 07 has been using a quart per 1500 miles or so and the "add oil lamp" comes on in the DIC. It does have the AFM and not sure what kind of oil was used on the last LOF - it was my father-in-law's truck. My 03 only used 1 to 1.5 qts every 8,000 miles. I'm going to change the oil the next decent day and use an ACDelco filter and Mobil 1 and see if that helps out.

    • Around 2008 if memory serves they took sulfur out. That was when diesel went up.
    • Question for you Grumpy, why is diesel so much more than gasoline? Seems to me that it may be slightly a little less refined than gas and it doesn't have 10% alcohol which presumably lowers the price of gas
    • Thanks, so being a different beast altogether, anyone know what the "optimal" temp is for the 10L80/90 for proper shifting?
    • How many years have I pointed out every point in that link to the folks here and been avalanched with criticisms and outright hostilities at times? I ran counter to even the great CUSTOMBOSS and Lake Speed Jr and the half dozen experts on YouTube and in the final.....GM, Physics (Stribeck) backs that Grumpy old Bear.    Honestly, I never said a thing engineering hadn't studied silly and laid in concrete during WWII. But I'm old, the information is old and yet, the Laws of Physics are eternal.    Okay there is one exception. I vehemently disagree with their use of the word 'tolerances' when what it meant is "clearance".   The clearance is the distance between two objects. The tolerance is the degree of acceptable variation permitted in that clearance. I.E., piston to bore clearance is 0.004" with a tolerance of +/- .0002" so the clearance is in specification if it lies between 0.0038" and 0.0042". Cutting that 'tolerance in half has ZERO impact on lubrication requirements. Makes for more difficulty in manufacturing.  But a tighter clearance 'MAY'. Depends on finish. Anyway....   It's one of those statements made by people to make themselves look smarter than they are to convince people who are as un-enlighten as they seem to manipulate their behaviors. But hey, the blind leading the blind puts them both in the pit.
    • Out and about yesterday on a long Saturday drive I passed a lot of Shell stations. My preferred, so I pay attention. Lot's of small town Illinois so not six stations in three blocks like the city.    Everyone of them over a radius of say 100 miles had regular at $4.19 but one which was the one closest to home at $4.15. However Premium pricing varied greatly between 85 cents over regular to $1.50 over. I'm not counting the price of the station with the lowest regular so the reference is the same for the remainder and all within the same brand. However the spread discrepancy holds across all brands.     @txab, any thoughts on that?
