Radio Stays On After Door Open...

First GM dealer experience with my first GM product. It didn't go so well.

Went in to repair a faulty door-lock actuator that failed after 3420 since-new miles. After two visits, it was fixed, but the dealer introduced a new and exciting problem.

Normally, the nav-radio will switch off when you open the driver's door. Now, that doesn't occur. The radio stays on even after you open and close the door - you can even close everything, lock via the fob and the radio stays on.

The radio can be turned off manually, but the blue "clock" screen stays on for 10 minutes.

Any idea what the dealer broke? They told me something about having to check the wiper motor for a short along with a long and drawn out electrical trouble shooting proceedure that will require another day out of service.

Any ideas that could save me another wasted day at the dealership?

BTW - truck doesn't know that the door is opened. At least some part.

The interior lights don't come on with the door open. The interior lights come on when other doors besides the drivers door are opened.

Curiously, the power running board deploys when the drivers door is opened. If I had to guess, I'm thinking something wasn't reconnected in the driver's door...

Agreed.... you just got unlucky and found an incompetent dealer, and unfortunately there are some of those out there.

They did not connect all the wires when they put the door lock actuator in. Take it back to the dealer easy fix. Or should I say easy screw up to fix.

We don't tend to notice every thing that a part does when we replace it. If I replace a door latch for an inoperative lock I will usually check to make sure the door locks, unlocks and closes properly as well as checking what ever I disconnected to get there. We have a bad habbit of thinking that the part off the shelf is the right one.

In this case there was a part change from the supplier and the new assembly is wired differently then the original. No one told GM about it untill we had a bunch of these vehicles doing what yours is. There is a bulliten to rewire the circuit but it IMO is key worded all wrong and it is pretty hard to find unless you know it is there.

The person you talk to on the phone likely doesn't know much about the job that was done or what could be the problem. It isn't their job to know, they are not mechanics they are service writers and that is what they do, write.

Most of the guys in my shop didn't know about this part change but I posted the bulliten in parts so no one would get burned. If you want to save them a few minutes the bulliten # is PIT4758B document id 2239554.

Good luck and try not to beat up the service dept too much, it is our fault we don't check every single little thing that could be affected by a repair but there is a million and one things that can stop working correctly after taking a door panel apart. We just hit on the ones that come to mind. It isn't really our fault they changed the wiring without putting a little note in the parts box to give us a heads up.

If it makes everyone feel better the tech will probably loose money doing the job again.

Thanks for the replys. Sparkstech, I'll bring the bulletin numbers to the dealer - the service is scheduled for next Friday - and hope for the best.

I'm not looking to bend anyone's nose out of shape or loose money for the working guys. Quite the contrary. Before I talked to the order taker, I spoke to the mechanic who worked on it thinking it might be a simple fix; but as I found out they think it's a bigger issue.

Went back last Friday and the dealer fixed the issue in less than an hour - thanks to Sparkstech's document reference. Tech was able to make the appropriate splices and the radio is now functioning normally again.
