Gas Cap Removal Help

Recommended Posts

Hey all. I have a 2001 Sierra. Is there any way to remove the gas cap assembly without cutting it or breaking it? There is a screw holding the cord on, but I can't seem to unscrew it, it just rotates in place.

I am doing this because I want to put in a locking gas cap (gas got siphoned out a couple of weeks ago)

I'm not sure on a 2001 but on my 2006 I couldn't really figure out a way(but I didn't try very hard). As I was doing it, it started raining pretty hard so I said screw it. I got my knife out, cut it, and haven't looked back. The lot I park in downtown a few guys I work with have gotten siphoned and their catalytic converters cut off so I figured they may as well choose the pickup next to me rather than mess with my cap.

Just an FYI, but siphoning isn't the only way people are stealing gas, these days :

Oh I realize it but if they're going to siphon, it won't be me. It will instead be the truck next to me. You can't safe guard against everything in life but you do what you can. It's just like locking your doors...if someone wants in, a deadbolt isn't going to stop them.

Agreed. I was just saying people are getting more resourceful than they used to be...

I removed the cord on the gas cap of my 2002 YukonXL, but it was fastened on with 'push-tab' thingy...can't think of what they're really called.

Have you tried just pulling out the screw ?

Perhaps I'm mis-understanding what you mean.

Your better to take the hit on the loss of gas then the pain in the a** of replacing the gas tank. Be thankful they didnt drill your tank.

My thoughts exactly. I do not want holes in my tank. And I will add, the guy drilling holes in my tank does not want me to catch him.

He will have holes in him and they will be much larger than the drill bit he is using.:dunno:

Redvett, long time no hear from you. Hope all is well.

thanks for the input, all. I messed with it some more, and discovered that it's not a screw, it's a plastic plug. It took some working back and forth and my friend and I were able to push it out without breaking it.
