Throttle Body Spacer

Although fuel prices are dropping, 15mpg cty/hwy milage still hurts a bit, so I'm attempting to find ways to squeeze every bit of power out of every ounce of fuel that goes into my engine (this also translates to piss-poor fuel economy and tire roasting power and torque at the push of the throttle) hahaha. I've already installed an msd blaster coil, cap, rotor and 8.5mm ignition wires, double platinum plugs (i understand this only prolongs their life, not their power, but it doesn't hurt to be safe  ) along with a k&n fipk cold air intake system coupled with duel straight pipe exhaust. My next plan of action is to add a throttle body spacer to compliment the intake system. Does anyone have any advice on good spacer, or any brands i should take a look at, or avoid?

Thanks for you help!

It appears you haven't searched yet, TBS's are better as paper-weights

I would have to agree and disagree. On a 96 or newer GM truck they are worthless, but on your 95 (pre-vortec) they can actually have some positive benefits. Now, that being said, I would not expect too much from it either. From what I have seen really there is not much difference in brands. I would search Ebay for a good deal.

On my 95 the best upgrades I found headers, exhaust, and my Jacobs Ignition system. They offer a guaranteed mileage increase. If I were still driving my 95 on a regular basis, I would also have a custom chip made for it after I performed all my upgrades. I have a hypertech chip, but I don't think it takes advantage of the other upgrades.

If you're looking for MPG's, put your stock wheels and tires back on. I know that's probably not something you're willing to budge on (I wouldn't) but those wide mud tires are killing you much more than any TBS is going to add.

I found positive results on my 99 350 5.7L but that was with a combination of: Programmer, Mass Air Flow Sensor, K&N air filter, bored out TB and the TB Spacer... I have heard that they do more for TBI motors...

But buy the time that you buy all that stuff you will be wishing that you sucked up the fuel prices!

I would put a chip in, but being a 95 it is still an OBD I system, and finding one is next to impossible. I did manage to find one made by Super Chip but they want $150 for a part that thy estimate will give me between 2 and 5 horsepower.

I appreciate all the tips guys. I think I'm just going to stick it out with what I have now.

I don't see any problems with what you have now. I do think you would be happy with the TB spacer. They are cheap and you don't get a ton from them, but I did notice an increase in throttle response. I have a TransDapt that I think I gave $45 for about 8 years ago.

As far as chips. I would keep considering them. Super Chips and hypertech make one for your truck, but I would get a custom chip instead. The custom chip is about the same price or cheaper and they can make adjustments for your Intake and Exhaust. They are extremely easy to change. You just pull the computer out from behind the glove box, pull out the old prom and put in the new one.

The link I gave you in my previous post takes you to a company that does custom chips and they run $50-180 depending what you want.

On your "straight" exhaust, I am assuming you removed the cats and have no crossover between the banks?

that's correct! the stock setup was a single pipe, and up until recently my truck required an emissions check once every 2 years. However, they're now only checking OBD II vehicles so I'm exempt from testing, and I immediately had a custom piece made, completely unobstructed from the exhaust manifolds back.

If you put in a cross over, or X-pipe, you would pick up some low to mid range torque.

+1 bajillion, H or X pipe will definitely make a difference.

Hey I'll keep that in mind, thanks! It's cold and snowy here now, but that definately sounds like a great spring project. lol I've even gone so far as to price out a supercharger, but that is definately not going to happen. At least, not any time soon.
