Tall Truck Bed Cap Or Regular Height Truck Bed Cap

Recommended Posts

I"m looking at Leer model 122 which is a tall truck bed cap and Leer model 100R regular height truck bed cap.

I can't decide between the two.

I don't have anything tall to put in the bed.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of having the taller model?

Thanks.

tall!!! It will be easier for you to get in and out of, and when you do get something that is tall, you'll be glad you did it.

In general I have to say... I hate caps. My last two trucks I bought used and they had caps. The longest I ever left one on was a week. You can't fit much under them! I always thought that if I had a tall one it might be somewhat better, but only if I could fit a dirtbike under one.

If you need to fit it thru a garage door or some of those multi level parking garages that have low ceiling heights then go with the low one. They are easy to take off & put back on if it is installed with them quick clamps. Need two people to do it. I just think the low ones look better, but that's just my opinion.

Whether or not you get a shell/topper/camper and what kind is really a matter of how you intend to use the truck. When I was involved in horses, I used to sleep in my truck shell a lot. I don't haul dirtbikes or other tall stuff. So, my 99 and the 98 before that got cab high shells.

In the past 6-7 yrs, I've done more hunting and need to haul equipment, coolers clothing and a lot of other loose load stuff. I couldn't get along without a shell. Last yr, I bought a full bed length 48" wide aluminum drawer set that is about 10" high. Now I think about buying a higher shell like the Leer 180 or the Snugtop below. I am not partial to the 70's design of that one you posted.

But personally, I prefer the cabhigh types like my 99 above has (Snugtop Expo, Supersport, etc). They are much better constructed/designed and look much nicer.

That's a Snugtop Expo. For the 07-09 GM trucks, the equivalent is their Supersport. Leer has a similar model. The rear and side windows are curved and flush frameless mounted to match the truck better. They are more expensive of course. But, I think well worth it.

Tall cap gives more room and everybody will think you are an old grandfatherly type. If you want to haul anything like a ATV or motorcycle, the tall is probably the only way they will ever go in there.

I like the stylish cab high models. (but my truck is just a car to me) The most I ever haul is a load of computers.

The Snugtop expo looks better than the Leer model to me because of the bodycolored piece between the windows.

Snugtop isn't a brand I've hear of before. Are they as well-built and optioned as the Leer models?

Snugtop is very much a premium brand (like Leer, ARE, and others). I looked at them but didn't care for the rear door latch setup. Very well made toppers.

Unless you need the extra room, I'd definitely go with the regular height. I'm not a fan of the tall cap look...like Jim says, it looks "grandfatherly".

Fixed.

Snugtop is a Long Beach California based company. They are a premium brand with excellent design and build and very popular here in SoCal. Leer is also a premium line, but slightly less popular here in SoCal. I'd say they are competing head to head in design and build quality.

At freeway speeds, there might be a slight fuel economy penalty for a higher shell. Not likely very much, but might be measureable.

Regarding the Expo mode: I don't think it's available for the GMT900 body. I think it was replaced with the Supersport model.

Go with cab height. I had a taller shell on a previous vehicle and although t was nice to be able to stack taller items inside, I could feel the drag at highway speeds. There will be a slight mileage penalty too.
