Engine Service Light On

Hello this is My first post here. I'm fairly new to GM's mainly a ford guy but this one is sweet here I am.

I connected My scanner to this truck and it gave Me code p1406 which isn't in My Haynes manual, the closest it p1404 and it is related to the egr. I did the test detailed in the manual for continuity and power source, I do not get any power to it (I suppose it should be constant with the engine running) and when I disconnect it nothing changes. I also checked the continuity to the terminals 5 to 1 and 4-2, i only get continuity to terminals 5 to 1 but the other one (egr sensor) doesn't . The engine must be cranked twice (two consecutive times) to get it to run and the service light is ON.

What should I do? I rather not start trowing parts at this to see what fixes it, My budget is low to any repairs that could be done by Me is the best option.

might help you if you post what truck, engine, etc. you have. Just a thought

p1406 ..... likely indicates a problem with your EGR valve pintle position (or so says Google) ... might be stuck ... you could take it off and see if it is stuck or carboned up .... cleaning it might work... replacing would likely fix it... if you replace it then get a EGR valve from the dealer .. they are more expensive but the oem EGR valves are more reliable than cheaper aftermarket ones.

I thought the name said it all . It is a 96 suburban with I believe a 5.7l gass burner and some ugly 19" rims and tires. I don't know much about this things. I'll try the cleaning first, what worried Me was the lack of voltage to the connector for the egr. On the test from the manual it says there should be 5v of power when You put the tester on the gray wire and another I can't remember now, I tested all of them and could not get any juice with any of them even with the engine running.

good point on the lack of voltage to the connector .. is the wire to the connector loose or frayed right at the connector ... can can you trace the wiring back to see if there are any frayed or scraped spots or loose on the other end ... all good things to try before laying out any cash for parts....

The wires look untouched and fairly clean, I will trace them and see. Last time I could see it going in a bigger harness but I didn't want to cut in the harness, which direction does it go so maybe I can follow it to the end of it first.
