Gm 1500 Sierra Front Hubs

My 2006 1500 4x4 Ext. cab is now requiring it's 2nd front hub in 68,000km. The first was done under warranty at 53-55000ish km.

Where is the best place to buy? (I'm pretty mech inclined and can replace these myself.)

I found a place called am auto parts that has them by the pair for $169US. Trustworthy?

GM parts direct wants over $180 each.

Any recommendations? (other than GM needs to spec better front hubs :D )

Also, where can I find torque specs for the hardware for these?

TIA

I'm in Canada. No AutoZones here.

Would prefer online sources (w/ cheap prices)...........

I would put in GM ones, a little more money, but you will be better off with them.

I just replaced my front passenger wheel hub assembly for my 2000 Silverado.

My mecahnic wanted $375CDN and UAP wanted $406CDN.

Went to here; http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecat...carcode=1358805

and got the part shipped to my place (just outside Montreal, Canada) for $190CDN (taxes, duties, shipping included).

Took 4 days to get it here via Fedex.

You might want to give these guys a try.

Good luck

PS. They're Timkens, equal if not better than OEM. IMHO

Thanks for the torque specs, Vortec. Are they listed online somewhere? I'll print these ones.

Jigsy. I did check Rockauto last nite. That's my 2nd choice. Going to try the ones from am autoparts. Can't be any worse than the ones made out of cheese that GM supplies.

I got them from my GM Techline eSI. I'm sure you could find them online somewhere if you looked hard enough.

Ummm.....

I'm not sure they'll ship to Canada....let us know when you find out.

Their prices look really good.

I have a buddy with a US corporation and a US mailing addy at Pt. Huron. He ordered them for me and I just pay him back when we receive them.

Update-

Could not get the hubs from AM Autoparts. They found every excuse in the book to not ship to a US postal address(paid for by a US$ credit card, ultimately based in Canada), none of them valid. Companies like that amaze me, because they'll give up $500 in revenue for every potential $1 of loss they might incur from shipping cross border - a loss that would only happen because they haven't put in the proper safeguards.

I ordered 1 from Rockauto, but it wasn't going to be here in time and I needed to get it fixed ASAP, so I ended up also getting one local for $231.00 +taxes(1 year warranty) and replaced the bad hub last nite. The one from Rock Auto, I'll keep on the shelf as a spare for when I need it.

These can be a bit of a PITA to replace. Ideally if I had a hoist etc. the job would have gone a bit easier. I do have lot's of tools and equip., so was able to complete the job in a reasonable amount of time considering it was my first one.

The biggest problem is rust and bad design. All the new bits now have a generous coating of anti-seize, courtesy of me, so when I have to replace that side again, the job should go a lot easier.

(start rant)

All of the issues I ran into were simply the results of cost based design, rather than intelligent design. In fact, these hubs shouldn't even come up on the replacement radar screen for at least 300,000km, if they had been designed properly.

Cost accountants(and their bosses) and some of the engineers should be forced to help guys like me and service mechanics do these jobs(by doing all the grunt and dirty work) for at least the first year of their careers.

If I was running GM, I'd tell the engineering dept. - 'Design the vehicles the way they should be built, no cost accountants will be allowed to interfere with the process.

After the design is complete, then we'll figure out how to cut costs - without sacrificing the integrity of the design'.

All the car companies suffer from the problem of cost based design- it's not specific to GM. Cost accountants should get down, pray and be thankful they don't have to deal with me personally when I do jobs like these. If one was standing beside me last nite, I can tell you that he/she would have found one or more tools I was using, forcibly inserted in a certain body cavity, such that it would have required the services of an emergency room proctologist in order to remove.(rant over)
