New Brake Kit?

hey guys,

I have an '08 GMC Sierra crew cab 5.3 2wd. At 30,000 miles my brakes are completely shot! Dealer says I need new rotors and pads in the front and new drums in the rear. I have to completely change out the entire braking system. Are there any brake kits for these new trucks? Dealer wants to charge me $1500.00 for the same crappy OEM parts. I was looking to see if I could get upgraded brakes for around the same price.

If it is not warranty, I would find another shop to do it, rates have got to be cheaper.

No.

 

But the parts to do the brakes would likely be about a third of what you got quoted. Maybe less than that if you went with aftermarket pads, rotors shoes and drums.

My bad. I didn't look up the prices. Looks like almost $1300 for GM parts at MSRP for the new rotors, drums, pads and shoes. Same parts from GMpartsdirect.com are under $700. Aftermarket should be much less.

I have never owned a new truck and was not sure if warranty covered any brake parts.

 

Are you very handy with tools?? $500 should do pads/rotors on all 4 corners. Rear disc??

 

Get yourself one of these pad spreaders...

A tube of synthetic brake grease for the sliders, a 10mm socket to open the bleeder when you squeeze the pistons back in, and you are good to go.

 

If not find a good local shop, they will do it for alot less than the dealer charges you.

Calipers and any of the Brake components under the hood such as the master cylinder and booster and such are covered and also including under most extended warranties. What is not covered are the actual crap made parts that always need replacing. Pads, rotors and drums which ac delco makes like cheap Chinese crap that autozone sells!

 

Im almost in the same boat no way im spending the same amount money wise to replace with these same pos delco parts, one hard panic stop and ac delco rotors = warped 9 times out of ten!

I just put drums and shoes on my '07 gmt 900, 34,000 miles. I bought Centric shoes and drums from autopartswarehouse.com. drums were $95 each and a set of shoes were around $55. Free shipping.

I don't know about other years/models, but my 99 2500 GMT800 has fantastic factory brakes. They went over 150,000 miles without need for change. They could have gone 200,000 miles or more, but I had the parts laying around in my garage for yrs and I finally just changed pads front and rear. I put Delco pads on again.

 

I don't know how good the brakes are in my new 08 1500, but it sounds like they put light duty brakes on the 1500. I do have a Vmax with discs front and rear. Don't know if they put a different pad/brake on the Vmax. 'suspect not. Everytime I hear a bitch about a new GMT900 1500 truck system, it just makes me more sure my next truck is gonna be another 2500.

My 96 Silverado used to eat brakes every 25K. But heck I was delivering freight in it everyday. My 02 Denali XL went 80K on the rear discs and has 93k on the fronts. I was/am amazed every time the tires are rotated and the truck didn't need a brake job. What happened? I thought GM had fixed the brake wear issues.

The GMT800 body (both 2500 and 1500) got new brake system designs when that body came in. My 98 had 22,000 when I turned it in. The front brakes were nearly shot.

 

My friend's 96 suburban went thru brakes every 22,000.

My truck had braking issues at 3K, took it in to the dealer, then 8K, back to dealer, and finally 12K. Unbelievable , I was not gong in for a third visit, not to deal with management and service advisers that are not very willing to help out. Seemed the dealer wasn't doing something right so I got fed up and replaced both front rotors, front pads, and rear pads for about $300. IMO, just go aftermarket and DIY, its not rocket science and easier on the wallet too.

You need new drums too? On my '95 Nissan pickup, I could not even tell there was any wear to the rear rake shoes or drums at 90k miles. I guess I better take a loot at the rear brake shoes on my '06 Silverado. But my mileage is nowhere near 30k so hopefully I have not need to replace the brakes yet.

 

But these OEM brake parts must be the lowest grade Chinese crap to wear out so fast.

does anyone have any experience with powerslot rotors? they seem like the best bang for the buck but im still looking for options.
