Front, Rear, Transfer Case Fluids

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking about changing my front and rear diff. and transfer case fluids on my '08 Max. Does anyone know about how many quarts I need for each one?

Also, I'm wondering what kind of gear oil to use for the front diff. My owners manual says to use 80/90 for 1500 trucks and 75/90 synthetic for 1500hd trucks. Is a Vortec Max considered a 1500hd or not? Or does it really make that big of a difference if I use 80/90 or 75/90 synthetic?

Recommended Fluids and Lubricants

This maintenance section applies to vehicles with a gasoline engine. If your vehicle has a diesel engine, see the maintenance schedule section in the DURAMAX® Diesel manual.

Fluids and lubricants identified below by name, part number, or specification can be obtained from your dealer/retailer.

Engine Oil

Engine oil which meets GM Standard GM6094M and displays the American Petroleum Institute Certified for Gasoline Engines starburst symbol. SAE 5W-30 is best for the vehicle. (GM Part No. 12345610)

Both provide easier cold starting and better protection for the engine at extremely low temperatures. These numbers on an oil container show its viscosity, or thickness. *DO NOT use other viscosity oils such as SAE 20W-50*

Engine Coolant

50/50 mixture of clean, drinkable water and use only DEX-COOL® coolant. See Engine Coolant (GM Part No. 12346290)
