Can't Shift Into Gear

I have a 2001 gmc sierra, today i was installing a new gauge cluster and i had to pull the shift lever down to get the old one out and the new one in. After installing it i went to shift back into park and i noticed it didn't feel right. Then i couldn't start my truck but had everything except crank. I manually pushed the shift rod at the transmission as far forward as i could and now it starts but the shift lever still moves up and down with no resistance and i don't have to press the brake to shift out of park. Also none of my gear indication lights appear except park when i have it all the way up, and i have no reverse lights either.

but today while driving my 07 jumped out of gear. i was hitting the gas and just hearing my flowmasters. i was like wtf, did my tranny go? i coasted to the shoulder and noticed something was wrong with my shifter. it wasnt in a gear at the momment at all. you can move it from N to D with no registance at all. is it just a link somewhere?

if its sloppy ,get under the truck and look at the end of the cable,if ok ,pull off the knee bolster and look at the other end
