05 Silverado...cd Player Toast. What To Do?

Recommended Posts

About two years ago, Chevrolet replaced my cd player under warranty in my 2005 single cab 1500 silverado. The cd's stopped spitting out and being taken in and the cd got stuck in. About a month ago it started acting up again and it appears i'm going to have to replace it AGAIN but this time it's not under warranty. What are my options here, as i've heard I can't replace it with an aftermarket head unit. Is this true? I also have a 12" subwoofer I just got a deal on and i'm going to want to hook it up to my new cd player along with replacing all of the stock speakers in the truck because for some reason my door speakers were cutting out for a while, and now dont work at all. Any suggeations and info?

I'll bet a local junkyard or stereo shop (BestBuy, etc) has these stacked up like cord-wood and would be glad to sell you one for chickenfeed.

I would get an aftermarket head unit. Youll need to get a dash kit that fits your truck and hold the new radio. There usually pretty cheap. If your running a sub then youll need a head unit that Rca outputs on it. Most of them have them nowadays any way.

I know on some older GM's you need a cd player relocation kit. I'm not gonna have a problem like this with mine am I? What I mean is throwing an aftermarket headunit in there is ok and isn't gonna mess anything up correct?

You'll be fine. You'll need an adapter plate to install an after market HU but they cost about 15 bucks max. Check out Crutchfield.com and enter your vehicle information. They'll show you exactly what you need.

Do you have chime that comes through your speakers? If you do youll have to get a box to connect all the new wires from the cd player. All your dash warnings run through the stock radio. If you dont get this part then you would have to cut the factory plug off and find out which wires do what and hard wire it. The harness fits the factory radio harness and its color coded for ease of hookup to your new radio.

Walmart has it for 35.00

Installed it and it works great. I tucked it in the dash and the volume is perfect on it.

Not sure off the top of my head but maybe so. Is an aftermarket radio gonna just plug into the stock wiring harness?

No, you'll need an adapter harness but again, Crutchfield will show you exactly what all you'll need. If you buy your HU from Crutchfield, they'll usually give you all of that stuff free!

Even if you don't buy from them, you'll at least know what fits and what to get!

since we're on the topic..I am buying speakers too. What do I look at when looking at wattages RMS/peak etc. of the speakers, and output power of HU

Some key features to look at (Both for HU and Speakers):

RMS power handling (speakers) and RMS power output (HU/AMP)

Speaker Impedance/OHM value. 4 OHM with some being 2 OHM and 8 OHM.

Dont forget the preouts of the RCAs. The higher the voltage, the better the sound will be.
