Potential Bigger Tire Problems?

Recommended Posts

I'm looking at getting either the Pro Comp Xterrains or the Xtreme All Terrains, possibly the Xtreme Mud Terrain. I currently have the 33" Pro Comp Mud Terrains and they are pretty rough and I am concerned that they might be putting excess strain on my truck (suspension, drivetrain, etc.). Now I am considering going up to 35" tires because 1) I want to and 2) only one of my choices is even made in a 33. I figure that since the All Terrains are less aggressive, they will put the least amount of strain on my truck. What do you guys think about these choices and should I worry about stress on my truck with them?

BTW, I am going with Pro Comp because I have good experiences with them and they are buy 3, get one free until the end of the month.

If you think a 35" tire with smoother tread will put less strain on your suspension, drivetrain, etc., than a 33" with a more aggressive tread, you're mistaken.

Agreed.

When you say rough, do you mean aggressive tread pattern? How on earth would that affect your drivetrain or suspension?

They're on their last leg, so the whole truck vibrates at low speeds and the steering will quickly shake back and forth when braking. I think this, coupled with the larger tire size, may be putting excess strain on the steering components compared with stock sized tires.

Thanks for the replies. Now that I read my post, I probably should have specified more. What should I really worry about if I go up to 35" tires?

they are bigger and heavier and take more energy to turn, thus creating more stress on your driveline components especially axles and differential.

Plus, I assume you have a tuner/programmer that you can input the tire size and it will adjust your speedo and trans shifts accordingly?

I don't but I plan on getting a BB tune if he's near me in the future.

Taylor,

Your truck is trying to tell you something....either the steering/suspension/hub is wornout and the tires are wearing irregularly because of it, or the tires are crap and wearing irregularly. Putting bigger tires on it of the same brand without further investigation would be like marrying the same woman you divorced, then cheatin on her, just to see if she really is a beeeetch.
