Oil Pressure Problem Intermittent

Okay here is my strange senario,04 Sierra 6.0 25k miles. When I drive for two hrs or so without stopping then turn off and after setting for hour or so then drive for another 30 minutes stop turn off for 15 minutes or so and start again the oil pressure goes nuts either 80+ psi pegged out or sometimes down to 5 psi.the vehicle is in sun the entire time outside temp is around 100 degrees.this problem has happened half a dozen times but not every time?I have not noticed any performance difference at any time when showing high or low.when truck cools down next day all normal? I setup an appointment with gmc dealer and of course oil pressure was normal. they ran diag test at $125 and mechanic found no malfuntions. I have always used syntec 5/30 w/delco filter every 5k. Any ideas? thanks

Probably stepper motor in the cluster, or oil sending unit.

I have the same isuue with my 2004 sierra, It happenned three times in the last 2 months. I would be cruising down the freeway and look at my oil pressure, its barely registering, but my engine sounded normal, so i kept driving, and all is well. It must be the gauge stepper motor, common problem.

'04 was one of the years that had bad instrument clusters and they were replacing them until the unit reached about 80k

anyone know how to troubleshoot sending unit or instrument cluster to find out which one is bad? dealer will not change cluster under recall until it goes bad or prove its bad? what is bad at $125 a shot It will pay for new cluster or sending unit if every time they find nothing. sorry for venting gmc dealer just got under my skin.I am still trying to fix.

Best way to check it first verify engine oil pressure is good with a auxilary oil pressure gauge, this will more than likely check o.k. you will need your engine oil pressure specs.

If o.k. try a sender they are not that expensive and not bad to change.Unless you have a signal generator to test the cluster or a scan tool (tech 2 ) to perform a sweep test of the gauges.

GM clusters had issues but also had engine oil pressure sending unit issues also.

I am just going to purchase a new oil pressure sending unit and see if that fixes it.I see it is behind the top of engine hard to reach but must able change somehow.the instrument cluster looks harder to fix and looks like all gauges will be changed during repairs but I only have oil thats bad, maybe time will tell.

Is it possible that a bad oil filter could cause this problem? anyone ever had a bad oil filter and what were the tell tell signs.

Okay conclusion to the oil pressure problem,it was the instrument cluster as per GM dealer finally.I had to wait until it failed and he could see it.The failure stayed at zero pressure this time,it was very hard to drive kept waiting for motor to fail even if it was false oil signal.

They are going to replace the IPC free of charge correct?
