Truck Bed Replacement..

Recommended Posts

I tipped the Sierra on her side last winter and dented the front fender, door, back door, and box... basically the entire side of the truck. While trying to get the truck out we managed to dent the other side of the box... I had the truck repaired through my insurance at my GM dealer's body shop. My insurance policy includes this provision called 'Replacement cost' which basically means if I have an accident, they replace the parts with GM parts and if I write the truck off, I get it's full replacement cost.. Anyways, something was misinterpreted at the time between the insurance company and they only replaced the door skins, they repaired the front fender and the box sides. The front fender looks ok but the box sides are still far from perfect.(after bringing it back to the body shop 3 times) I had started dealing with the fact that it would never be perfect again.. About a month ago, I asked my step brother to jump in the tuck and move it so we could load his CR 125... Well he cornered a little sharp and took out the drivers box side on my uncles jeep.. At this point I dont want to take it back to a body shop. Suppose I have this one side fixed, I'll still be looking at the crappy work on the other side... I've found a replacement box for 1800$ on Ebay but it's a 12 hr drive away. I dont mind driving down thee to get it but I dont have a trailer. Does anyone know of or work at a body shop in Fort Wayne? Ideally I would like to drive down and have the box installed right there and not have to worry about trailering it all the way back.......across the border, etc. How much labour is involved in changing a box? (hrs)? Is it a big job? Then of course, if I did drive down and have the box replaced down there, what do I do with my old box?

Anyone have any suggestions?

You can put some posts in the stake holes of both beds, stack them and use tied downs and EASILY transport the new bed home without a trailer. You might end up paying alot more in the swap from there than doing it yourself at home.

Just an idea.

You don't need a trailer to bring it back, just flip it over onto the box on your truck with boards in the stake pockets and strap it down inside, (just make sure you put some rags between them so you don't scratch them.

They are very simple to change with a cherry picker or a couple of friends to help (only 8 body bolts , tail light wiring plugs, and the filler neck for the gas tank)

As to getting rid of the old box I can't help you I have 2 already behind my shed.

I agree I would bring it back myself and swap it out. Otherwise you may not be saving that much money and will have alot more hassle to get through.

To the previous poster im wondering if you posted on craigslist if someone would take those 2 you have stored behind your shed off your hands.

Borrow or rent a trailer. Swap it at your house. Sell your bed for scrap or to a auto junkyard if it's still useable at all.

HMMM. I could probably haul it back staked and strapped...

Any idea how much a truck bed weighs?

It's a GMT900

You should check with Canadian Customs beforehand. Can almost bet you will be charged duty to transport that as a part across the boarder. Would likely be much easier to install in the US before crossing.

Good luck to you on this, and it's definately a necessity to have a few buddies around to help you. I just swapped utility beds on my truck, and it was a bitch. The old one was a Royal, and the damn thing turned to rust. I found a Stahl at a local salvage yard with minimal rust on it. They wanted $1250. for it, but I picked it up for a grand + tax. I wound up using a buddy of mines boom truck to do the R&R. I had to do a little fabricating since the Stahl came off of a 4x4, and the rear bolt holes didn't line up. All in all, I'm happy with the newer looking bed. If I wouldn't have been pressed for time, I would've taken some pic's.
