Floor It From A Stop

I have a '01 k2500hd 6.0L and it dreadful to accelerate from a stop. I have plenty of power when I'm moving, but it's lacking the quick response from a stop. I know it's a heavy truck and really not a performance machine and that's not what I'm looking for, but it feels like I need to really lay on the gas to get it moving and can actually see a big drop in my gas gauge after a 20 mile trip.

It's a stock truck with a volant cai, westers tune and flo-pro "close to stock sound" muffler

I don't know if failing/clogging cats could cause a problem, but I just passed emissions and the CEL was a bad knock sensor over a year ago.

Fuel filter was done ~2k miles ago.

I don't know what to try anymore , the gas is just killing me (and I know it's a truck and I'm not trying to match it with a civic mpg)

What gears does your truck have? Also a higher stall converter will get you moving faster from a dead stop.

I got an 04 with 4.10 gears from a stop no wheel spin. Power braking it to like 1800 it will chirp the tires. The truck will never over power the braking system when doing a brake stand it just Revs. I think it's all about the power curve they just ain't got torque down low.

Did you eliminate the Torque Management with the tune? It is pretty limiting.

+1 for torque management

it is almost impossible to get a truck to spin with tm. And than when you take it all out it is very hard on the trans. The part that you need removed fron the tm settings has to do with anti abuse mode. That is what limits the amount of fuel timing and in my case with a throttle by wire system actually how far the throttle plate opens from a stop.

Yes the torque managment is completly off. I've had it off for about a year now. I still coils belive that the throttle plates are not opening all the way. From the way it takes off it exactly what it sounds like the blade progressily opeing. Sorry for all the bad spelling.

IF torque management is off, then a higher stall converter will get you the result you want.

What would be a good size stall for towing plowing and everyday use? Do you happen to know what the stock size is? Do you think tires have a big play cause I have coopers and they have amazing traction dry. When it's wet it's like driving my mustang.

Well, in the 1500's... Alot of people use the trail blazer stalls which are around 2500-3000 rpm I think that would be a good size cause it's still low enough for towing and drivablilty. No it's not going to be like driving a mustang, but if you get on it.. it's gonna go.

First off, if you cant brake the tires free with the brakes on you don't have all of your TM removed...that is a feature of anti-abuse mode, and if I can do it with 40% removed from a 4.8L you damn well can with a 6.0L. You have a Westers tune, I am pretty sure that they would have not turned TM off completely, and from the sounds of things they didn't do much with your Anti abuse mode either. Most mail orders never do this...I have a w4m tune and I had to beg to get some TM removed over what he normally does.(30%)

If your cats were clogging, you wouldn't have passed your Emissions test, and your exhaust would smell like rotten eggs.

the stock converter i a 4l60 is somewhere between 1800 and 2300 stall. I have the 2300

a 4l80 is 1200-1400, and first gear is quite a bit taller than a 4l60.

4l60e ------------- 4l80e

1st-3.059:1 --------- 2.482:1

2nd-1.625:1--------- 1.482:1

3rd-1.000:1 --------- 1.000:1

4th-0.696:1 --------- 0.750:1

So its not going to be a rocket on wheels no matter what you do, but yeah a high stall....something in the 3000-4000 range will get you up and going. If you want to tow and plow you will be fine getting something like a 2500. You will still get a good boost in performance.

My big question is why do you want to spin your tires anyway....they're damn expensive man.

Oh and to answer your Fuel question...stop punching it from a stop and I guarantee you will get at least 3-4 mpg increase. Drive it like a truck and not a sports car...its a 3/4 tonne work truck man.

thanks for the all the replies, but sorry I couldn't get on sooner. I am confused though. I never spoke of trying or wanting to spin my tires. All I asked is why I really need to get on the gas to get it moving from a stop. (or what would cause this to occur) It seems to be very sluggish from the stop.

All the TM was removed

I also have a 04 k2500hd and 04 2500 express (a little different w/o 4wd) with the same 6.0 and 4l80e and they are much more responsive from the get go.

I always techron and seafoam the trucks with scheduled maintainence.

i dunno

LOL you have been Thread jacked. :(:fume::lol:

As a side note...a 4wd is a lot heaver than a 2wd and has more drivetrain losses.

did it respond any better when it was new, or even a while ago???

guys there is something wrong with the truck. You shoudlnt have to put the go pedal to the floor just to pull out.

Weather there is or not there is no CEL on to diagnose anything.

We also have no idea of any other mods, like bigger tires, which make a huge difference, and he is comparing it to a 2wd van, which is going to be quicker due to being a 2wd and lighter.

other questions are, whats in the bed, and how big is your aftermarket exhaust...too big will bog you down big time.

Hence the last question I asked...."did it respond any better when it was new, or even a while ago???"
