Traction Control Button

I have 2009 GMC Sierra, crew cab, all terrain, 5.3 litre.

I want to know the function of the traction control button (ie what happens when you turn it off)

The sales guy told me it locked up the rear axle, but I highly doubt the truck came stock with a differential that can electronically go from open to locked. If it did, is it the G80, or a different lock?

Push the button and traction control turns off. Push and hold the button for like 7 secs traction control and stabilitrak turns off. The G80 is not controlled electronically.

Yea it just cuts power to stop the spinning.

Doesn't sound very helpful at all for off roading.

If I install a full locker in the rear (detroit, powertrax, etc), can the traction control be disabled completely?

I think a tuner can disable it. Justin said he was going to disable it on my truck, I don't have traction control, but he stated that sometimes they still have a little bit of traction control programmed in.

Wow...thats a salesman that really knows his products.... :(:fume::lol:

It helps quite a bit on ice and snow I know that much. but why disable it when you can just turn it off.

as far as the G80 goes...its a decant locking rear. If you put a Detroit locker in there the truck will be next to undrivable.

If you go with a Detroit trutrack you are basically replacing what you have with the same thing, that reacts a little faster (usually the upgrade if the G80 gives out). The G80 engages when you get a 100rpm differential between the wheels, or 1.5 tire rotations if the other wheel is stopped, trutrack does the same thing at 50-70 rpm and 3/4 tire rotations. You still have to load the drivetrain to do it if your on Ice, snow or slippery mud(push the brake slightly while you have your foot on the gas and spinning).

IMHO one of the better lockers for drivability is the Lock-rite, it comes apart easier under cornering and is much cheaper.

Or you could spend the cash and get an e-locker or an air-locker.

Traction control is simply a retard of timing when the wheels slip, hence the cut in power. stabilitrak is completely different. Why you can disable it is because you can easily get stuck. I've been in snow where the truck wouldn't spin a tire with it engaged. Turn it off and I can go right thru. It has a purpose, but not in deep snow and mud.

Thanks. I don't like that for slow rock crawling; i want it to be locked moving slow, not have one tire start slipping out of control before it locks.

By e-locker, I assume you mean electronically activated locker that allows wide open differential, and electronically fully locked?

Who makes this ?

Also, what is the rear axle on the 2009 GMC crew cab trucks?

Im wondering if OX has a model for this rear axle.

Rear axle is a standard corporate 10-bolt....unless you drive a 25/3500...than it would be a 14 bolt

I have no idea if OX LOCK makes anything for it though...it may have subtle differences from other 10-bolts.

The E-locker is made by Eaton...yes its electronic lock. also you could get an ARB air locker, does the same thing but with air. IMO not as practical as now you need to mount the Air Compressor somewhere...but on the same token...now you have onboard air to air up and down when things get hairy out in the rocks.

These types of diffs are usually best for a Daily Driver as you can run open to save fuel and make the vehicle easier to handle, and they work great for front ends as well, if they make them for your front end that is.
