I'm planning on taking a trip from Dallas, TX, through the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, Bryce Canyon, Hoover Dam, Vegas and Death Valley around December 23rd this year.

 

There is definitely a possibility of running into snow and thieves. I want to get something to protect the cargo in my 5'8" bed from the weather and from bandits.

 

I have a 2009 GMC Sierra Crew Cab Fleetside 5'8" bed. I have the Cargo Management System installed as well as a bed liner. I purchased the side rail protectors but haven't installed them yet.

If I remember right, the 100XR is around $1,400

Depends on how often you use your bed, and what you use it for. A lot of it is opinion too.

 

I know the 100XL's run around $1200 so $1400 for the XR's sounds right. If you do go with tonneau, I would suggest looking into roll-up ones. Offers more options IMO.

 

It's all opinion though, and to each their own.

I do haul bicyles and plan on hauling dirt bikes. These are my man pieces of cargo. I shied away from the roll up because I was worried the compartment it rolls up into might make it so my bed would no longer fit a dirt bike (with the tailgate down).

 

I'm hoping not to spend over 7 or 800 dollars

I have been looking at the Bakflip tonneau also. When I bought my truck used it came with an undercover one piece tonneau. I have never had a cover before and absolutely love having one now. I will be taking a skiing trip soon and like the idea of being able to lock it. I don't think that is possible with a roll up as far as I have seen. I don't like the undercover because if you have something taller than the bed can hold you have to take off the cover which is a pain. Get the Bakflip and and tell me what you think.

Don't forget to make sure your tailgate locks too!

Depends on what you're going to put in the bed. I'm not a big fan of toppers/shells but that's what I would go with for this trip. You can fit more things comfortably. Just make sure there's some type of lock on it.

I believe he mean the roll up type like the Extang Revolution which I have and love. It rolls up above the rail and takes up very little space. I don't believe that it would hinder you from being able to put your bikes on the back. They are cheaper in price (mine was around $400) and they can't be opened without opening the tailgate first, but they can be cut through with a knife. In my mind, its usually outta sight, outta mind. So if they can't see anything in your bed they probably wouldn't take the chance of breaking into it and coming up with nothing. JMO. Well, I have the Bakflip, and I really like it, you have to open the tailgate to open, but you do have to pick the top up and then shut the gate, and as far as rain/snow proofness goes, it lacks quite a bit in that department, I do get some water in the front and rear corners, I have the front siliconed pretty good so it doesn't leak, but the back you can't since it sits on the tailgate, also if you don't have a locking tailgate, I didn't have it, so I bought an OEM one off ebay for $40, and it works great, just put the key in and turn it to code the lock to your key

How much did that cost? Also I assume that improves your gas mileage some the tonneau covers boast 10% increase is it about the same for toppers?

Mine was around 1700. Don't believe the gas mileage claims though. The improved aerodynamics are probably offset by the added weight. My mileage didn't change one bit. Hey... at least it didn't drop!
