Gmt900 Speaker Install Question

Well, I started to install my Infinity Reference speakers this evening and ran across something interesting. The hole in the door panel for the speakers is not just a round hole (see photo below). I have also attached the closest bracket that fits the hole. See that it doesn't fill the gaps below and above the speaker. Stock speaker shown at the bottom. Question is, will that effect the sound? Seems to me it would. Do I need to cut a peice of 1/4" plywood to cover the entire space, then mount. Any input ASAP would be greatly appreciated as I have my door torn down now, and would really like to get the speakers in before I have to put everything back together to drive it tomorrow.

I'd just put some dynamat behind the speakers and cover those gaps with it, personally. That would probably be better than using plywood since the wood will cause resonance at some frequencies, and that could actually be worse. The dynamat will just deaden resonance and allow the speakers to deliver a more "true" sound quality.

I think ideally, the factory speaker would unbolt from that adapter, and the aftermarket infinity would bolt in? Does that appear to be a possibility? Or is that adapter molded right to the factory driver? Is that the "Bose" speaker system? Don't have a real answer for you ...just trying to learn too, so when I upgrade my system. Probably do Infinity RS or Kappa's also.

Anyone know where I can buy Dynamat locally. Their website doesn't list any locations.....and that stuff sure isn't cheap, even though I need very little. I'm not against it, it's just that my door is apart now, and I need my truck today. Looks like a may have to stick the stocker back in until I get a solution.....

The stock speaker is molded into the adapter.

i would just install the new ones in since you are this far with the installation. And then you can look around when ever for the dynomat. Then when you have to install the dynomat all you would have to do is unbolt the bracket, install dynomat, and rebolt up the bracket and your done.

Too late, I just reinstalled everything back to stock. I will also need some new connectors since they are totally different.

I installed infinity 6.5 in mine too. I got them from crutchfield and they came with brackets that look just like the factory ones and then you bolt the speaker to the bracket. The bracket goes on the door just like the orginal. They also included connecting wires, so I didnt have to cut in splice, so much easier.

Might want to check them out. They are made by Scosche (part number 142SMH634B)

edit....I just read on the Crutchfield site that you'll have to custom fabricate a speaker bracket/spacer to install these in the rear doors. Does anyone know what all is involved in that?

Actually just found them at Best Buy for $5 each cheaper.

I got two pairs (one set for the front and one set for the rear). They are the same for both and fit perfectly. They told me that I needed the shallow speakers for the front. So I got the 6022si for the fronts and the normal 6022i for the back. I dont know if you have to get the shallow mount speakers, but thats what I got.

It's hard to believe that with the adapter holding them out another 2-2 1/2" from the door that you would need the shallows for the front.....I'm heading to Traffic Jamz, so I'll ask them their thoughts.

So I ordered the adapters from Crutchfield (because they come in a pair for $14.99), and pulled my 250 watt amp and 12" sub out of my GMT800 to get it all installed into my GMT900 next week. I will have 4 Infinity Reference Series 6 1/2" door speakers on an Alpine 75w x 4 amp, and my 12" American Bass sub with the American Bass 250w amp. I'm excited!

I'm 40 years old and don't necessarily like loud music, I just like it crisp and clear. I may crank it a little when a good Pantera or Slipnot song comes on though

Thanks again for all the input. BTW, for $100 labor, I'll let the professionals take care of the installation.

I have been thinking about doing this same thing for a while. Did you have the Bose system in your truck? Are you still running the stock head unit?

No Bose, and I'm want to try to use my stock head unit. If it doesn't sound good enough, I guess I'll swap eventually. I had to buy an adapter for the RCA jacks to my stock head unit too, but that was only $30.
