What Year Was It?

What year did GM start making their HD trucks that had better wheel clearance in the front end? One of my friends picked up two used 2500HD's that do not even look like they are 4wd trucks. They stand very low like a 2wd truck and the front end is so low looking. I was guessing it was 01-02 time frame?

well from 99-00 all they had was a light duty 2500, IIRC they were 8600 GVWR. In 2001 they came out with a 2500HD with a 9200 GVWR. The frame was taller, hence they sat up taller. This is also the year when you could get the duramax and the big block with the allison along with the standard 6.0. From 99-00 in the 2500 all you could get was the 6.0, unless you got a "classic" 2500 where you could still get a big block, just in the previous body style. There are some other things different about the pre HD trucks, but to answer you're question about the height thing it is probably due to the frame height. I bet you're freind has 2500's and not 2500HD's.

Come to think of it, I don't think it says HD on his. One of the trucks (00) has the 454ci big block. I think it is a 454, correct? The other I think is a 99 with the 350. So the frames are taller now? Cause I have a good 2" plus over his trucks, maybe it was 3", I forgot. So all of the older trucks from 00- an older are just 2500's, not HD's? I remember Ford using Super Duty the begining of this decade, and the 98 F250 was a light duty truck. He's gonna get two new plows for those trucks, gonna go with 8ft plows instead of 7ft ones. And the lower stance got me a little concerned about the heavier 8ft's.

I don't think there were any 454s in 2000, at least not in a GMT800 chassis. I think they completed the total line swap to the 800 series starting in 2000. The 1500s started in 99 with a classic version of the 1500-2500 through 99 model year. If its a 2000 it is probably a 6.0L which if I remember right is sort of a stroked 350.

 

The HD chassis was developed to accomodate the new Allison trany that was to back the new D-max starting production in the 2001 model year. If you notice the 800 series body's set up on top of that HD frame more than around it like on the light duty 2500s and 1500HD crew cabs.

2000 was the last year for the classic 2500 with the 454 big-block. In 2001 that truck was replaced with the 2500HD and the big block went to the 8.1L.

 

My buddy had a sweet 2000 classic excab short bed with a 454. He sold that truck and bought my 01 2500HD 4 years ago.

That's correct, in 2000 you could still get a 2500 "Classic" withe 454, then they did in fact switch to the 496 in 01. My father got one of the first ones out in 01. In fact he traded a 99 2500 GMT-800 for it. And actually I think the 2000 Classic body style was only in 2500 and 3500 platforms IIRC. So there wasn't a 2000 1500 Classic offered, the last year for it was 1999 (I think).

a 6.0L which if I remember right is sort of a stroked 350.

 

The 6.0 is an LS1 block which is no relation to the 350. (Other than a V8)

The 01 and up gmt-800 HDs frame is almost 2 inches taller than the 01-04

LD frame.

 

I had both and actually measured them...................

That's correct. 01 was the first year for the 2500HD with the taller frame. IIRC it was to allow the Allison to fit.

2500HD was also 9200 GVWR

2500 was 8600

Thats right Roofer ! Also note that those years Burbs with the 8.1 only had the

L4-80E tranny. instead of the Allie because they used the shorter frame.

pre '01 2500 c/k "LD version" = 7200 GVWR and 6 lug wheels "classic style"

2500 c/k "HD version" = 8600 GVWR and 8 lug wheels "classic style"

2500 silverado(new style) only avalible in LD 7200 gvwr version fduring 99-00-only avalible w/ LS small blocks

 

as far as i know, the 454 was only avalible w/ the 8600 lb version.

 

by the way my '99 c-2500 w/8600 gvwr doesnt seem to have lower ground clearence than the newer ones. The newer models just seem to have a taller/wider cab and body when ive parked near them. ive never measured it though

My '01 HD came with a factory 2" lift kit. I think it was standard on the HD.

 

 

 

The build sheet on my '02 HD lists the 2'' lift as an option.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
