Transmission Seals

I have a 99 Silverado. This past weekend I was driving up over a pass and noticed that I was smoking pretty bad. Other then the smoke there were no noticable problems with the truck. I immediately pulled over and found tranny fluid coming out of the transmission oil pan seal. I'm currently in the process of replacing the gasket, it's a pain in the ass, the shift linkage bracket is a pain and the drain plug is siezed which I guess is pretty common. My question is this: if I heated my tranny up to the point that the pressure blew out the pan seal, how likely is it that I blew out the forward or rear seals? Should I replace these just in case? I don't want to drop my tranny but if its recommended then I will. If you have any advise or tips for either doing this or what I should do it would be appreciated. Also if you have any brilliant tips for getting the shif linkage bracket out too, it would be apreciated.

I've never seen a pan gasket blow out before ,I think maybe it was overfilled and puked out the vent ,

 

the vent is a hose that SHOULD hang down the dvrs side of the tranny ,it can get plugged but usually by mud .

 

I would not rush unless you see a break in the pan gasket.

 

the bracket is a PITA and can be moved with a large pair of channel locks using the frt shaft as a base to pull the bracket over to and lower the pan at the same time ,

 

bark the drain plug out an impact and socket or air chisel on the plugs edge,

 

if the gasket is not physicaly broken wash it all off ,fill it to the top of cold engine running on a level surface and run it up.

 

find the vent hose ,they are cut on an angle,they can be hard to find ,look close with a good lite,clean it .

+1 That gasket is one of the best sealing surfaces on the entire vehicle. The OE gasket is metal wrapped in rubber and is just about indestructible. Even if you could kill it there is no pressure in the pan, that is where the pump sucks from. There is vacuum in the pan, if there was pressure the pump wouldn't be working and you wouldn't be moving.

 

DO NOT REPLACE THAT GASKET with some crappy cork or paper based gasket. If you are intent on getting a new one get the one that belongs in it.
