[gmt900] Does It Sound Like My Auto Ac Needs Help?

Okay let me run this scenario by you and you tell me if this is normal..

 

2009 Silverado.. Auto AC..

 

Auto Turned On..

Air Temp set to 70

AC (snowflake) button OFF

Outside Air ON.

 

If I flip to recirculate to Interior Air only the AC Compressor kicks in and the air starts getting COLD as ICE yet the AC Indicator still shows OFF.

 

Lets say you just want the fan on but don't need the AC kicking in.. You don't want any heat added either. Just the outside air to flow in through the vents..

AC (snowflake) button OFF

Outside AIR On.

 

Okay so a big garbage truck pulls out in front of you and it stinks so you switch to recirculate to keep the outside air OUT!. the AC Compressor Kicks on and brings the air down to 60 Degrees yet the AC Button is STILL OFF!.

 

WTF!

 

 

 

And I might add the intelligence that the AC employs to regulate the inside temp SUCKS A$$!. 70 degrees feels like 80 and 75 feels like 90.

If I am not mistaken I believe that the compressor is suppoose to turn on when you set it to recirculate. I have a Maxima and it would show that the AC was turn on when the heat was on and recirculating. My brother ( the mechanic of the family) explained that even though it is the heat and not the AC the compressor is suppose to turn on when recirculating. I dont remember exactly why it does that maybe someone else can elaborate.

 

The intelligence of the AC/Heater does suck. I think the unit tries to get to the interior temp that you picked really quick. For example, if you turn on the heater and set it to 75 but the sensor reads that the interior of the truck if 40, it will put out 90 degree heat to try and bring it up to 75 as fast as possible. Then when it hits 75 it will regulate itself. the only problem is that when you get into a cold truck in which the interior temp is 20 degrees and you put the temp for 75 it can blast 90 degree heat forever because it is trying to bring the temp up to 75. The problem arises because after 10 minutes of having the 90 degree heat blowing at your body and face while being completely bundled up you start to overheat while the inside temp of the truck might still be in the 50's or 60's. So you overheat and put the fan speed down and adjust the temp because you feel like it is already 75 in the truck when it is really only 50. Kind of like when its 20 degrees outside and you first go out and you say how cold it is. Then you start playing football and you start to heat up and layers of clothes start to come off. Then before you know it your in a t-shirt playing football and you think that it is now 55 degrees outside when in reality its only 30 outside.

 

I like my maxima for this reason. If you set the temp setting to 75 it might blow 78-80 until the temp reaches 75. It will only blow 90 if you set it to 90. so it doesnt bother me to set it to 90 for the first couple of minutes and then turn it down to 70 because once i get comfortable it will blow 70 degree heat, not 90.

Thanks for the response.. I just didn't think that made a lot of sense.. If the Compressor comes on in the Recirculate mode then why the need to have a separate ac button? At least make the AC button light up..

Normal operation. I agree, however, that I'd prefer that I get to decide myself. It's been idiot-proofed against those folks who turn on recirc and then complain because their windows fog up. I also agree that the A/C light should come on when the A/C is engaged.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
