Installation Issues: Viper 5901 Remote Start

I got a Viper 5901 for Christmas and began to install it with my dads help. I called BestBuy and they told me i needed the xk06 bypass, so I ran and got that, hooked it up the way the installer there told me to. I was really excited to get it starting with the remote, when I started it with the remote it started right up. I did not install the alarm, just the remote start and the lock/unlock, but the lock/unlock did NOT work. I am positive that I have the green and blue lock/unlock wires hooked to the right place in the truck, but they just wont work for me! Is there any way that there could be a programming issue or does anyone know what other wire feeds for the lock/unlock portion of the system? The lock/unlock feature on my keyless entry that came with the truck still works, but the Viper remote just wont work for me. Of course when you call bestbuy about the bypass and buy it they offer tons of help, but not after you buy it, all they say is bring it in for $80/hour!!! Does anyone have any clue what my problem could be? Any help is appreciated. Thanks

have you tried contacting DEI? Their technicians are very helpful if you can get through. You may need an additional relay to make that work.

I called them the other day and waited on hold for an hour and 45 minutes, when I finally got through, the guy told me he couldn't tell me anything because I'm not an authorized installer. So, i dont know what to do.

I purchased the same alarm for my truck, and it was just more economical for me to have Best Buy install it. They offer a lifetime labor guarantee, and Viper will honor the warranty. I searched quite a bit, and there is literally no real information on how to install the alarm. I found a forum where installers network, and they answer some of my questions. Perhaps you can get them to help you. Let me look of the website, so I can post a link for you.

I've already found the installation guide online, and found tons of wiring diagrams online as well and couldn't find a thing. I wonder if it could be a problem with the Viper brain itself.

Could you be more specific about where you connected the lock/unlock wires? What wires didn't you connect ("didn't hook up the alarm") or did you just leave off the siren?

From what I understand, most of the wires connect to the GM bypass unit. Only a few wires (7 wires) actually connect to the truck itself. The document I attached tells you where most of those wires are. Install guide should tell you what wires to match.

I connected the lock and unlock wires to a light blue and a white wire going into the BCM. And I didn't connect anything for the alarm, although when I push lock on the remote, it says armed, but the truck doesn't lock, and when I open the door the remote goes crazy, as if the alarm was going off, but its not hooked up. I'm already getting sick of having the Viper remote and my original keyless entry remote on my keychain, it hardly fits into my pocket! lol

In my opinion, you need to connect the alarm properly (completely), for it to work correctly. There is a feature on the programing for the alarm that will allow you to set the alarm in silent mode, meaning that it will not sound through the siren. If the alarm is triggered, then only the remote will sound. That can done with the 2 way remote.

I just hate tapping into so many wires when I don't really need it anyway. The guy at bestbuy told me the locks would work without it. I wonder if there could be a problem with the Viper brain itself...

It is a possibility, but you have no way of exchanging it or figuring out if it is bad unless you had it professionally installed. Viper will void the warranty since it was not installed by an authorized DEI installer.

Possible solution: I purchased the 1701G GM bypass unit that essentially takes care of everything for you. The viper alarm connects all the wires to that module, and only 7 wires (total) go directly to the truck. The DEI installers raved about how easy this modules makes the installation. You are using another bypass module that simply bypasses the GM factory security system, and that makes it a harder install. My advice, spend the extra cash, and get the better bypass module.

I am just guessing here but I have a feeling that you may have connected the door lock wires to the wrong wires. I would agree that you should hook up the whole system and it sounds like the module that Al is referencing will make the install easier...

How did you determine what the correct wires were? It sounds like you have them hooked up to the dome light pin switch and not the actuator for the door locks. Those you will have to test with a meter and will either be + or - when locked. Then the alarm needs to be programmed accordingly.

I will be working with one of our techs on Wednesday on a 01 silverado (coincidentally) I will let you know if I can figure anything out based on that.

Well, I paid $20 for a book with a wiring diagram in it and it said that the lock and unlock wires were light blue and white and located at the BCM. We tested the wires with the lock/unlock button on the door and they were negative when the button wasn't pushed, but positive when the button was. And when I test my Viper brain itself, I hold up the tester to the terminals that the lock/unlock wires plug into, and push the lock/unlock button from the Viper remote and there is no positive when the button is pushed. If you could find anything out for me Wednesday, I would really apperciate it! Thanks
