Gearing Question

Ive been thinking about regearing to 4.10s to make it a little easier to run 35 or 37s, and this might seem like a dumb question, but since I have a 4wd is there anything special I need to do to the front or do I just buy a gearing kit and go with it? Also does it affect my locking rear diff by doing this? Like would I have to get a new locking rear like a trutrac or would my G80 still work fine?

if your going with 37s go with 4.56 min. the G80 WILL WORK, BUT NOT LONG..

4:11 gears will work just fine for a 35" tire, 4:56 will be kinda high for that size tire and if you decide to got back to stock size tire you will still be fine. I ran 4:11s and a G80 running 42" tires and never had a problem with the G80 and the truck was used off road alot.

You can upto 4.88 gears and keep the Eaton G80 for the rear. I will cost you a bunch $$ to do front and rear, $1,400-$1,600 for parts and labor.

For 35's you should run a 4.56 gear. And make sure if your a 4x4 you do the same gear for the front if you dont want problems just making sure. And the stock locker just fine if you dont get stupid with the truck.

I beg to differ. I have 35's and with the 4l80 the truck is begging for a re-gear.

He's considering 35's or 37's. Being stupid with it is almost inevitable. :uhoh:

I run 35`s with my stock 3.73 gearing and truck works fine, even pull a 10,000lb travel trailer with the 35`s on it, 4:10`s will bring you back to factory gearing with 35`s, if doing heavy pulling the 4.56`s are the way to go but you will have to stick with the larger tires with that gearing, like I said though my truck still works good but hopefully I`ll have the cash to go 4.56`s.

Just food for thought....

My Sierra is in the shop right now getting some 3.73 gears. It is 2WD. Im not running big off-road tires, but I am using a set of 24 inch tires and wheels during the warmer months. For a brand new gear and pinion set + labor + computer re-flash to accept the new gears it costed me $650. Hopefully it will be ready for me to pick up Monday. I miss my truck so much. Im tired of driving my wifes little cross over... (Yuck)

After days of looking around, I took my truck to a custom racing shop in my area. He primarily does drag strip cars and hotrods...

Well I dont have much to pull, just a small/medium sized boat and the occasional utility trailer every now and then, nothing that exceeds 5/6k lbs. So if I'm not going to be pulling heavy, do I need to regear the front still? And just another question, what brand gears are you guys using mostly? Any particular brand to stay away from? Just looking for some feedback.

You most definitely have to regear the front if you regear the rear. They must always be the same ratio, just like you should always run the same size tires on the front and rear. If not, major carnage will ensue :fume:
