How can I find out what kind of tranny my 2002 8.1L has? It is an auto.

With the 8.1L you would have the Allison.

Trans in the NBS 1500HD, 2500HD, 2500HD with 6.0L was a Hydramatic 4L80

 

GM's Hydramatic division makes a bunch of different models. First character is number of forward gears, second character is 'orientation' with L being for Longitudinal (RWD) and T being for Transverse (Front wheel drive) and the numbers at the end being a 'relative torque capacity'. Newer trucks have a 6L80 for 1500's and 6L90 for 25 and 3500's
