Probably the gearbox. How hard was the pitman arm to do? Or how much did it cost? Im in need of one soon i think.

My 2006 GMC Sierra Crew Cab Duramax was all over the road when there was poor traction (ice and snow).

Put brand new tires on it thinking that would cure it and no luck.

I had the dealer inspect the front end and they ended up replacing the tie rod ends, pitman arm and center linkage (warranty thank goodness). The ball joints were still good. Now it steers straight and tight as an arrow.

Only had 40,000 miles on it.

One of the mechanics said he has seen them in for front ends even sooner than that. The Duramax is pretty heavy.

The only items not listed as replaced are center link, upper / lower ball joints.

Is there excessive slop in your steering wheel? Possibly steering box.

did you check the rubber bushing between the gearbox and steering wheel axle ?

If you are referring to the "rag joint", that went the way of the dodo in 91' or so me thinks.

being the steering rod is totally new the only thing left i guess is the steering box and by the way the pitman arm was a total B*TCHH!!!!!!!!!!!!! had to take the steering box out and buy a special pitman arm puller and than modify the puller and use a 7 foot breaker bar and i still managed to snap a 1/2 inch drive hey maybe thats why the steering box is shot!!!!!!!!!!! lol

Hmmm.... Not exactly what i wanted to hear so i think ill pay a shop to do that for me!!! Oh and one other thing that got me before with the whole sloppy steering issue before was the control arm bushings. They were shot in my 94 and took forever to find that they were the cause of the shitty alignment and swaying all over the road. And also im not sure about these newer trucks but in my 94 i was able to adjust the steering box a bit to tighten it up and it worked well but not sure if its the same on these newer trucks. Let me know what you find!!

I know this is an old post, but I have a similar issue with my 2000 Suburban 2500. I have an issue that seems to be intermittant. It has a dead spot and I have to over correct about a fist width to keep the truck going straight. It doesn't seem to be as bad when its under 20 degrees outside and I don't notice the issue everyday. I have read the speed sensor could cause an issue, but eveyone mentions a problem while turning when refering to the steering speed sensor. This is not an issue while turning. The truck has 165k on it and I bought it last summer so who know what has been replaced. The steering wheel is slightly off as well, you have to have it slightly turned to go straight. I am leaning towards replacing the gear box, but have a bad history of throwing parts on a truck until its fixed. This seems to be a common problem so I figured I would ask before I order parts. Thanks for any input.

I replaced my shocks and the problem seemed to have been fixed until it warmed up Sunday night to the mid 30s. There is definitely a connection to the outside temp and my problem. I noticed it in the warm months but on dry roads it didn't bother me and I just figured it was normal for a suburban. Now when the roads are bad it makes me feel like I have no control. I am not leaking any ps fluid and it only seems to happen when its over 20-25 degrees. Does anyone know of a way to test the gear box? I am going to drop the skid plate on sat and double check the pitman and idler arms. The tie rods and ball joints didn't seem to have any play last I checked. Is it common for a 2000 k2500 Sub LT to have a factory damper? I will know more when I get under it, I was just looking for tips before I start working on it. Thanks
