Report: GM to invest "hundreds of millions" into pickups with fuel-saving tech

Pickup trucks have always been a major component for any successful full-line automaker here in the United States, and, even though sales are down, it doesn't seem likely this will change any time soon. What will change, though, are the kinds of expectations truck buyers will have for their new rigs, and that includes improved fuel economy without a reduction in capability.

In order to meet these seemingly diametrically opposed objectives, General Motors will reportedly invest hundreds of millions of dollars into its truck platform in an effort to add a few precious miles per gallon to its fullsize Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups.

Included in the fuel-saving technology may be more than just tweaks to the engines and transmissions. For instance, Automotive News reports that The General has been working on an innovative grille that would boast electronically-operated openings that could improve aerodynamic efficiency when maximum engine cooling isn't needed. Such a system was first seen in concept form on the Cadillac Provoq crossover from the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.

I hope it pays off...investing "hundreds of millions" for 1-2 MPG is not worth it. 5-6...FOR SURE!

I agree, they'd better get some sizable gains from this update if they want to continue being taken seriously.

On another note, I was at NAIAS today and looked at all the major manufacturers' full-size trucks. Overall, I have to say I STILL would take my GMC (or a Chevy) over any other manufacturer's truck. The interiors weren't as nice, the exteriors didn't really do anything for me, I just feel that from a functional standpoint the GM trucks come out on top. I just hope they remain that way after the next update.

You're complaining about job security?

GM builds the best all around truck. Some excel at looking good on paper (Ford), some tried to change everything and didn't (Tundra), some just bombed badly (Titan), and some have a lot of past mis-steps to clean up before the sales pick up (Ram).

There is a reason why GM sells the most trucks in the universe every Earth year.

Direct injection. maybe a diesel/electric combo, like a freight train.
