No Driver's Information Center When Temperature Is Cold

I am having some strange things happening with the DIC on the 03 Sierra 2500HD Crew Cab I bought a couple of months ago. Among other things, like changing back and forth between english and metric, it seems to have a mind of its own. If the truck sits for a couple of hours and I open one of the doors, the DIC lights up with random symbols that don't seem to make sense. Sometimes it is musical notes and sometimes it is little letters like in the picture I am attaching.

In an earlier post about the metric/english thing one of the forum members mentioned that the cluster may need to be re-programmed at the dealer. With this issue of the strange symbols, I think it is indeed in need of a reset. Anyone know how much this should cost at a dealer to have it reprogrammed?

Thanks for all the assistance on this forum. I've learned so much in 2 months that I am confident I could rebuild a 2500HD from the ground up if necessary! Just kidding, but seriously, the forums are great!

Cheers,

In addition to the problem I noted above, since it is now winter, the DIC does not work when the temperature is below 4 deg C (35 Deg F). It does not come on until you drive the truck for about 15 minutes and then shut it off for a while. It will then come on when you re-start the truck.

When the temperature is really cold around 0 Deg F, the Instrument cluster lights flicker on and off and there is a relay clicking sound while the glow plugs are cycleing on. Once you start the truck it seems to be OK except for the DIC which still won't come on.

I am wondering if this might be a Body Control Module problem or is it the instrument cluster itself?

Cheers,

just take it to the dealer and get it diagnosed, its like 100 bucks but there could be worse going on then alien symbols..

I think you are correct on that. Today when I opened the door to get in the truck the DIC was reading DIE. Its DRIVER 1 without the RVR1. Makes me wonder if the previous owner may have done some creative programming at some time. LOL
