On the 06 trucks, can the thermostat be removed and the housing be replaced or is the 'stat and housing permanently attached to each other? I want to remove the 'stat and button it all back up to flush the system.

You can pull the stat out on all LS series engines. It's just easier on the later versions. So to answer your question, yes take the housing off and then stat will come out pretty easy. It's held in by the friction of the rubber gasket of the stat. The earlier versions required disassembly of the stat to take it out. The switch was around 2003-2004ish.
