Low Fuel Warning And Fuel Range...

How many miles can do you go when your low fuel light comes on? Do you actually trust the fuel range? Because when my light came on, I looked at my fuel range on the DIC and it said 42 miles....

I dont have the full DIC but everytime I have the light come on (not a good thing for the pump), I pull over and toss in the two 5 gallon gas cans that are in the back but I only on carry them on extended trips.

That light is just an indicator that tells you you are really low on fuel ..... it calculates the remaining miles number based on the fuel gage estimate of remaining fuel and the average fuel consumption for your truck as accumulated in the computer ... so if you were coasting gently along the highway you might get a little farther than 42 miles... and if you are booting it around city traffic you might run out of fuel real fast.

1. You still need to use common sense on when to buy fuel

and,

2. It is not good to run these in-tank fuel pumps with the tank really low as the fuel in the tank acts to cool the pump. Running the tank low all the time or just running on 5-gallon fillups all the time will lead to the pump running hotter than it should and then will lead to premature failure.

50 miles maybe, don't do it if you can avoid it...the fuel guage is not super accurate, 10 gallons puts me about the 3 quarters full mark..from the one quarter to empty mark..on a 36 gallon tank

I was riding down I-10 one day and my low fuel light was on and my DTE showed 50 miles, a truck stop that I liked to stop at was only 30 miles down the road so I thought I would give it a shot.

All of a sudden the DIC DTE dropped to 20 miles and the read FUEL LEVEL LOW so I pulled in at the next exit and put in 24.6 Gallons out of a possible 26 gallon capacity.

I should have been able to make it but when the DTE dropped from 50 miles to 20 miles so quick I decided not to try it.

I think the Light comes on at 1.5 to 2 gallons so.... around 30 miles tops on my truck (i get about 15 on the interstate it would be higher on a 2lane thou).

Just a thought for ya. Your fuel pump is cooled by the gas in the tank!! Driving the tank to the point that the pump is not submersed in fuel it does not cool as readily. Thus putting a higher stress load on the pump...

Just my 2 cents, do what ever you wish I love selling fuel pumps.... I filler up at 1/2 every time...

Edit: My fuel pump lasted 11 years and 173000 miles and 3000 hours (yeah I idle and talk in the summer a little it gets hot down here in Mississippi).... It did not dye when I changed it, the pump acted funny (made some clicking noises then began pumping one time) it was pumping fine had 45psi on idle and was not allowing flow back. It had also began making slightly louder noise. I was starting to get leery of traveling as I sometimes take 500 mile round trips at random times.

When my light comes on, I'll go fill up. And it will only need 20 or 21 gallons. This means I still have 4 or 5 gallons in the tank when the light comes on, so assuming 15 mpg (what I figure I'm averaging) then I'll have a 60-75 mile range when the light comes on.

My 03 1500 was dead on 30 miles. I averaged 15mpg (over 80k miles), so I am thinking 2 gallons.

My 08 D-max (Lord, I love saying that) has done it twice at 46 miles.

I think I can do anywhere from 20 to 35 miles. I also keep a 5 gallon jerry can of gas in the bed for just in case.
