Worn Out Engine

Recommended Posts

Gentlemen,

I would like the opinion of anyone who has worn out an engine regardless of oils used and change intervals. Chevy engines please. Crappy designs don't count.

I have just never heard of anyone wearing out an engine, at least under 400k.

Breaking an engine does not count, nor does overheat or other abuse. Just wearing out an engine with proper air filters, etc.

Would an engine needing freshening up, like a rebuild with new bearings, rings etc. count in your mind? Just curious what exactly you're looking to find out.

I have worn out quite a few engines over the years, why do you ask?

As a matter of fact I have one now that is worn out, and it has always had proper maintenance and has 189k.

Just trying to get an idea how long these things last. I suppose "freshening up" would count as long as it genuinely needed it. Say burning more than a qt every 2000 miles or so. New bearings and rings would count.

Thanks

The most miles that I have ever gotten out of a gas engine is 325,000 the lowest miles that I ever got out of and engine (without breaking something, we are talking just wore out) was 100,000, but that was back in the 80's, oil and filtration have certianly improved things.

I have a friend that has a 5.7 in a chevy truck that has almost 450K on it and he is trying to see exactly how long it will last, but technically it was wore out 100K miles ago, he is just trying to keep it going as long as he can.

I've pulled a motor at ~100,000 miles (5.3, 2000 model) and the cylinder walls looked wonderful, too bad a piston rod threw itself through the block.

298K on a little 2.2l when I sold it, not leaks, didnt burn anything. Put a new head on it at 260k due to head gasket.

Snapped a crankshaft in my C60 366 with about 50k on the ticker.... Could have been me snapping the clutch is what I am thinking thou. Edgewise 86 R10 305, with over 500k... Does not burn oil.

Wow, you broke a 366 truck motor. I'm impresed. That is the same block as the 454 derated to make it even more bulletproof. I guess nothing is perfect.

265,000 on a Toyota 22R from 1983. Still ran OK - leaked a little oil in spots. Don't know if that counts as a crappy design or not.

I personally have not had more than 168,000 in a 96 Izuzu Oasis minivan. It could have gone much longer before I got rid of it as it still ran like new. I have seen several stories of some GM trucks and vans going over 1,000,000 miles with just regular maintenance.

Can someone please define a 'worn out' engine for me? I have a silverado with 225,000 miles on it and it does not burn one drop of oil between my 5000 mile oil changes, and it still runs like new. There is a small VERY slow oil leak coming from the rear main seal, but I do not consider that to make the engine worn out, just a failing seal. As said earlier, we all would leak some if we had that many miles!

Your 225k silverado is not worn out.

Worn out = hard to start, low compression, low power , smokes like forest fire, rough idle and running, etc. I would not include leaks in this because seals can be easily replaced.

Haha, I guess I should clue ya in on how to kill it........ Hrm, all you have to do is drop the clutch with the chain tight, to a JD 650G attached to the other end..... I was being stupid.... I needed another dozer to pull it out..... I hung it up in a overly swampy ditch.... Anyways about 4k with the trannie in 1-1.... I heard al;sdjf apoushf iuash fliuasd hflkasdhlfksahf (best interpretation I can give), which was followed by me said MORON.... WHERE was your brain.... Replacement 366 was sourced (AKA GM) and installed.....

I ended up with a friend bring his dozer over and pulling it out....... But I got the ditch re-worked and its not a swamp anymore....... Just cost a couple extra grand.... Mainly for the engine I KILLED!!!

Edit: I have several GM's with well over 500k without anything but oil changes..... They do not burn oil!!! But I am a 3k or 6 months guy whichever occurs first. Also, towing rates are 1500 miles per oil change or 3 months.
