Transmission Question

I have a 1993 Chevy 4x4 with a 4L80e and 180,000 miles. After a little slipping the tranny went out and will only go in reverse (no forward gears at all). Any ideas on what might be wrong and how hard it would be to fix. I am fairly competent on working on my own vehicles, but have never tackled an automatic tranny. Hate to spend the money at the shop if it is something I can fix or rebuild. Any information would be helpful.

Buy the ATSG repair manuals and possibly DVD and rebuild it if you'd like to do it yourself. This is something I'd love to tackle just to say I did it. I've thought about getting one out of the junk yard or something and rebuilding it with all the upgraded components so I can replace mine when it starts going to hell.

Brims is on the money with grabbing one out of the yard and building for future use. I built the C6 in my F... truck and it was a great learning experience. It is not difficult, but does require you to build a few special tools to compress packs and such. Also a great learning experience. The nice thing about having a good shop do the work is that they clean everything out/rebuild/replace and tune before they turn it over, and they do it in about two days. My 700r was $1000, which I figured was $350 in labor I spent to have it done by a pro. Besides that, I can go back and complain if I don't like how it is working....
