Air Condition Maintenance Repair

Need to figure out how to diagnose and repair an A/C on a 1997 Chevy S-10 LS 2.2L ,2 wheel drive. It is a project I want to start up, so any help will be useful. First, I need to diagnose why it is not working anymore, freon, compressor, collector, etc, and then find and replace the offending part. Also, any reference to the right tools would help.

 

I am guessing it is the compressor , or the freon leaked, I also hear that it might be a good idea to upgrade my A/C system ?

 

This is a fixer upper I have, and next on my list is the air bag system. Then some body work.

There are several things that can keep the ac from working. There is a pressure switch located on the aluminum canister of the ac that has two wires going to it. Wiggle those wires to see if the compressor kicks on. If not, then the system probably needs recharged. You can get the R134 upgrade kit at any parts house. It is just an adapter for the low pressure fitting. Now would be a good time to get an ac o-ring kit. Anywhere you see a connection, take it apart and replace the o-rings. You can get a recharge hose with gage fairly cheap. Start with 1 can of acoil and 2 cans of refrigerant. That should get you back in business. If it doesnt, replace the pressure switch.
