New Truck! What To Order?

Hi Guys,

Looks like I may be ordering a new 1500 this week. I have been test driving, pricing, budgeting, all that fun stuff trying to chose what vehicle to buy. Choices were, F150 w 5.4, Dodge ram 1500 w 5.7, GMC Sierra 5.3 or 6.2!

Most are pricing very close to each once the term loan is factored in. Overall the least expensive in order are, Dodge, Ford than GM. With the close pricing, there is no clear bargain out there (very suprised) considering, cash pricing would make the Dodge the clear winner. The Ford is weak in the engine department so its off the list, its close now between GMC and Ram, with an edge to the GMC. I have owned 5 GM trucks since 2001, 3 2500 hd, 1 1500, and 1 Avalanche, they have been very good to me hence my pull towards the Gm again. I pull a 3500 lbs boat and a small float(7000lbs a couple times a year if my other trucks get caught in a bind.

Looking at the GMC Sierra crew cab Sle 1sb, cloth interior. Storm Grey ext, and grey interior

My questions are:

Is the 6.2 worth the small cost?

Any special(wierd) options I may be forgeting about?

get the 6.2! many people on here who ordered the 5.3 over 6.2 regreted it. the 6.2 is also not bad on gas at all compared to the 5.3.... im sure actual 6.2 owners will quickly chime in and tell you their opinions

I have vinyl floor in my truck and last weekend when I did the first wash it was sure nice to take a bucket of soap and water out there and have it look brand new in seconds flat! I like it too since we spend a lot of time in the bush and our boots are usually full of mud, not to mention the crazy amount of salt that is used on the roads and sidewalks here I would never have carpet again.

Guys that use trucks as trucks usually want viynil floor. I would buy a WT if i could get one with all of the options that my LT has.....but that wouldnt make it much of a wt i guess. Unless you know you want the 5.3, get the 6.2. You dont every hear of guys trying to get less power out of an engine do you!? Just because you have the extra HP doesnt mean you have to use it all the time...............just nice to have it when you need it! Wish i'd have got the 6.2

First of all, I am with everyone else get the 6.2, I agree 100% you never hear anyone around here saying they had to much power, that thye should have bought a 5.3.

 

 

Aslo if you pull trailers, I would recomend the backup camera, I have had one in several vehichles now, and man those things are nice when hooking up to a trailer. Also good for whenever you need to backup . Now that you do not have to have the pricey nav system, to get it. It might be something worth ordering. In the case of the non NAV system trucks the camera display is hidden in the rear view mirror.

I seem to be one of the few here who votes for the 5.3L, but it's ultimately a personal choice and depends on your priorities. When I was deciding how to order mine I drove trucks with both engines and thought long and hard about the 6.2L. I also had a 5.3L in my '02 Silverado which I never felt was underpowered for towing/hauling or was too slow....but then again I drive my trucks like trucks, not sports cars. For me the cost was the deciding factor. Initial cost for the engine itself isn't too much, especially if spread across the life of a longer loan. But, I also factored in the extra cost for premium fuel (which is recommended to get the full benefit of the 6.2L) as well as the slightly lower fuel economy. It would have cost me $800 more a year assuming I kept the truck the 10 years that I plan to, and that's if gas prices stayed where they are now and the miles I put on the truck stayed the same. If either increased, which is a very real possibility for the gas prices, the cost difference would be even greater. To me that little bit of extra power that I had no real need for wasn't worth the cost, especially when that money could be put towards more important things in life like the kid's college fund, retirement, or paying off our mortgage sooner. Every little bit helps.

Wow, that storm grey is one nice colour, isn't it? I really like the brown but its gone now and the storm grey is somewhat close. Yours is exactly what I want. I am really leaning towards the 6.2 at this time! I have had 2 5.3 and yes they do the job but at times wish I had a bit more, one thing is they are very good on gas. Over the year though the 6.2 will use more fuel but it will get lost in my fuel bill for the year as I have to fuel 3 trucks and 3 machines. So 6.2 it is.

Vinyl floor?

Hell yes. Carpet sucks! I"m a contractor and I move a lot of dirt, much of it ends up on my boots and into the carpet and makes for a very dusty ride. I use my truck for 50/50 pleasure and work and have had carpet and hated the dust and salt build up, with vinyl I take a bucket of water and a rag start wiping and shine it up with armor-all and shes done. If my dealer finds what I need on a lot with carpet, I will take it as isand change out the carpet later. Most likely will need to order as not many 6.2 outs there.

 

Back up camera is also going in, good recommendation.

It's a truck. Don't expect to get good gas mileage. That said, get the 6.2. I have one. 13MPG. If you can live with that go for it.
