Lighting The Logo?

Hey Guys, I've been toying with the idea of making my GMC emblem on the grille backlit. Is there a way to do this? I just think it would look bada$$ with an "in your face" red glowing GMC badge. I was thinking red LED's behind the emblem. is the emblem transparent enough for LED's to show through? and how does one remove the emblem? I've done some work with LED's on the interior, I put some blue ones under the little rubber flaps in the cup holders and in the cubby spaces in the center console, so everything glows blue.

Not to burst your bubble, but anything lit up red or blue on the front of your truck will get you some unwanted attention from law enforcement.

I'm not too concerned, I would use this only when not driving the vehicle, just for show.

If your are dead set on doing this you should check out using EL tape. it might be easier and give you a more even glow.

My 2 cents: I had ambience LEDs on my chopper for a while and eventually took them off. It just struck me one day that I was slowly becoming what I hate. Putting things on my vehicles for no reason. It is a slippery slope and before you know it your ride looks like it went through a Pep Boys with a crap magnet on it.

El glow would be the best bet!

don't do it, its a large fine...moving or parked you cannot have lights on that serve no purpose(under glow) its considered a distraction to other drivers...its a cool idea but these trucks look better debadged and toned down

:D Sorry, but that's funny! You see them all the time. We call them "Pep Boy Mobiles". A couple of my friends will love the "crap magnet" statement!

Now I have to find something to clean the coffee off of my monitor.....

Follow-up: mllc...my post wasn't meant to say your truck would look like a Pep Boy Mobile!! I just thought Reid's comment was humorous! Make sure to post pics once you get your emblem lit-up!!

Well Since everyone seems to think it's a bad idea, I'll have to rethink it a little bit and come up with something else

The bottom line is....Do what you want!! It is YOUR truck!!! I say, give it a try. It can't be too expensive. If you don't like it, take it off!!

I will echo everyone else and say its your ride so go for it. I wasn't even saying that a backlit emblem would be bad, in fact might be kind of cool. I just know myself that sometimes I think of things to do and have to back myself of the ledge! Luckily the forum usually stops me before I start cutting into stuff.

Just last week I had the idea of having a body shop plastic weld driving light buckets into the side mirrors like an FJ. Luckily the forum stopped me before I actually asked a body shop about doing this. That would have been embarrassing.

I lighted the GMC grill logo on a 1999 K1500 Suburban. Most people think its OEM stuff. Only rarely does anyone ever ask about the light. The secret, if there is one, is keep it low key. Visible only at full darkness and then only to the degree its visible. I have never been stopped by any law enforcement types regarding the light. I used three bulbs in each letter and painted them with flat black spray paint to control the intensity. Same bulbs that are in the yellow side marker lights and under the dash for courtesy lights. I have them today and actually forgot about them until I read this thread. I got a grill from the scrap yard...(Pep boys must have missed this one) rigged it to the daytime running light module. About $25 in the whole show.
