Howl From Transfercase Chev 06 4x4 Autoeletric Buttons

i own a 2006 chev silverado z71 4x4 with eletric button select with auto4wd as part of the package it has worked fine and quite for 18,000 kms the truck now has 80,000kms total on it;for the last month on a steady increase the howl from the transfercase has gotten worse and ever louder.

took it to gm dealer under gm exstended warrenty,they tell me the howling is normal and is not repairable. as a gm tech for close to 10 years before i quite and went on to better things this did not sit well with me ,so i said to service manager so if it never made the noise before untill now then explain it to me.

so he said it had not been working right up to now ,and the noise i here means its working.i tryed my best not to freakout .i said the clutch pack inside the tcase is not working as intended ,but he insisted nothing was wrong,

does any one have a tsb from gm about this so that i could use it in my defence to get this fixed.or do you know where i can get the info i need to fix this my self,thankyou. john

So it moans in 4hi or 4 auto? Some chain moan is normal in 4hi. It shouldn't do it in auto.

 

The clutch won't howl. It's hard to say without hearing it. Could be a bearing going, could be a bad planetary, could just be the chain. As long as your complaint is documented at the dealer you should be ok if it blows up.

 

Did they check the fluid level?

i took it to them with hopes they would do things right.they say they checked! i checked 5,000km back it was ok then.the noise is only in 4hi .4auto does not stay engaged long enough to tell if i got into some real bogging it may,but we use it for in town in the crapy snow and ice,when hunting ,or off roading to the fishing hole.we use 4hi the howel or it could be a growl.sounds like its coming from left front of truck,i found metal fileings in front diff ,had them rebuild it under warrenty,noise is still there,but the metal fileings in front diff are now gone,sat morning i am going to my shop at work and put on hoist to see what they realy done.i will check the tcase for fileings at that time if i find any its back to the dealer and the fight is on. i wiil take down the tcase info modle and so on and so forth.and will let you know what i find ,if it blows up under warrenty that would be great but it is afecting my fuel milage,and the noise drives me nuts,it was not there before and now it is,thanks for the reply to my question no one else braved the storm and ventured a answer, john ps i wil have to do it as a new post or some thing because i have not figered this out yet.
