Replacing A/c Compressor Clutch?

On my 99 Silverado (4.8L), can I replace just the compressor clutch, or the whole compressor? If so, what special tools do I need, if any? Thanks.

Go over to the ACkits.com site. They are the best A/C forum around. You'll need a clutch remover/installer which you can either buy or rent from an autoparts store. You should just buy the tool. If you have these vehicles for very long, the clutch will likely need adjustment sometime in the future. The tool is also for adjusting the gap. If the gap gets too big, the clutch will not engage. That is a very common reason for the clutch not working.

Gentlemen,

With the compressor off the vehicle it is a pretty easy job. Autozone loans the puller for free. Usually the problem is the clutch bearing which is separately replaceable. Did one two years ago and the bearing was 4.00. If you do the work on the vehicle, you do not lose the charge of refrigerant.
