Im back from a wonderful weekend trip

Well this weekend was fun.  Got away and into the outdoors.  Also went and looked at atv's.  Found an nice one.  Honda Fourtrax Recon.  2wd 229CC five speed auto clutch.

 

Price $3499 on sale for $3199

 

Would like to find a used one for less $$$.

 

Anyone buy an ATV?  Can you negotiate pricing like with car salesman?

Most of the time, you can negotiate like a car salesman.

I would reccomend getting a 4x4 if you plan on going out deep though. Let me tell you from 1st hand experiance, its not fun trying to get these things unstuck from a marsh, mudd puddle, or anything else.

I can almost guarantee you that if you buy a 250 now you'll be shopping for something bigger next year.  (Especially if your friends are riding more powerful machines).  Personally I'd shop for a nice used one that is a little more powerful.  It seems like they are either used or abused, so shop around...  You can also save some sales tax if you buy from an individual because they will normally work with you on the price you claim to have paid when you transfer the paperwork.

Mainly why i want one is to plow snow.  No friends of mine have one.  Ill take the thing when i go fishing and ride it.  

 

My problem is i cant find any used ones

your best bet is looking for something used. there is a ton of utility quads on the market i'm sure you'll find one for cheap.  i'm guessing that your not going to have the need to fly up the dunes or race. so you dont need a machine like mine, LT500 (Quadzilla), very hard to find in good condition. but normally 4x4 quads are dumped on the market. just look around and dont get in any hurry.

 

some dealers you can bargin with, there some that wouldnt move on the price. if you wanted to finance a yamaha product i think they have some kind of special rate going right now.

Sure, the old "I'm only getting it to work with, but I'll play a little" argument again!  Kind of the same reason I'd like to have a four wheeler.  I'll use it mainly for checking cows on pasture, but no one said I can't have fun while doing it!  ;)

 

Most people that I know that have used them for plowing snow didn't like them.  The blades on the things are too light so they don't do a good job staying on the ground, and with the very narrow blade you have to use you have a large amount of runoff.  You would be best off to buy a small snowblower to put on front of it rather than a blade.  Yeah, it costs more, but its only money!

LOVE ATV's I would say Polaris, automatic 4x4 say a scrambler 500 brand new is about 5,500 so a used one would sell around 4,500 2 wheel drive is usually 200-300 less (my 2x4 was 5,200). The perfect all around quad, soft seat, you CAN add racks and push snow. They go too I have had mine up to 68 MPH takes a bit with the auto but it will get their.

Found out a local place has some 01 2wd's discounted.  I am going saturday to check them out.  If i can get em down to $2200 for one ill take it right there.  They also have a nice snowmobile (98) on their site which i may look at

 

How should i haggle?  My truck deal was easy i used the supplier deal.  Any tips?

You may want to consider a 4X4, especially if you plan to plow snow.  I've ridden both 2wd and 4wd, and swear by the 4wd.  I have a older Yamaha Kodiak (4X4, 400cc), and am very happy with it.  The most fun I've had is riding in cut corn/hay fields with about 4 inches of snow.  So much fun that I went out and bought a helmet.

I also recommend getting a 4wd over the 2wd.. Our Kawasaki's are both 4wd and they go through everything! Except deep snow!

 

I d look at getting a good used 4wd over a new 2wd

I also have an older Kodiak 400 4x4. Nothing beats it. I also use mine to plow my driveway, it works good enough. By no means is it perfect but if you put a little weight on the racks it plows through some pretty deep stuff. You might also want to check into automatic trannies and manual auto clutch trannies. When the auto trannies (usually belt driven) get wet they tend to slip a little. But for regular trail riding an auto tranny would do fine. My $.02
