Tire Pressure Indicator Check

Question

I recently purchased a 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD. It has about a 6" lift on it with aftermarket 20" wheels and 325/60R20 Open Country tires. My questions is this... On the dash, a message appears that says to check front left tire pressure, front right tire pressure and rear left tire pressure. Since the truck doesn't have the stock wheels and tires on them, does the truck still monitor tire pressures? Also, the stock pressure settings as stated in the truck's door jam says front tires need inflated to 50psi and rear tires 80psi, however on the tires themselves it says put tire pressure at 50psi. What should I do? Is there a way to disable messaging center about checking tire pressure if there are no sensors in the aftermarket tires/wheels? I don't even know what to look for on the wheel itself as to what is the sensor for tire pressure and how does it work?

Thank you for the info.

Yes, you're correct, I do have the Toyo open country M/T's.

I called the GM dealership in my area and they said for $150.00 they would hook my truck up to a computer and remove the tire pressure monitoring function. Sounds like a lot to perform such a simple task with a computer.

Well... first, it is illegal for them to disable ANYTHING that is a federally mandated safety item and second, I doubt any dealership will do it for any amount due to the liability involved. I'd bet the guy you talked to is misinformed.

Wow, I wonder why they would say something like that.

I'm not saying they didn't say it... just that they can get in a world of shit over it. In the world of lawsuits and safety nuts we live in, they would be exposing them selves to some real liability.

Consider this if you will guys.

At first I was NOT a fan of the TPMS

I was headed to Houston one Saturday. Once I hit the highway, the TPMS popped up a warning saying I had a low tire. I stopped at a tire shop and sure enough, the right rear had picked up something on the highway and was dropping pressure fast. At 80 MPH I doubt I would have caught it before it blew out, went flat, or ruined one of my expensive wheels. TPMS saved me about 600 bucks and a boatload of time and trouble.

For the 150 the dealership wants to disable the system, I'd buy a set of sensors on Ebay and program them so save my ass.

Just my take.

honestly man, your best bet is do the procedure and find out if you have them, which i am willing to bet you do, another way to check is to make sure its just not those two you mention on your DIC. Cause if you are getting an error message for just two tires and not the other two, hint hint... you must have sensors and probably have to be relearn. If not, just order a set and have them installed and problem fixed. Its pricey, but hey nothing is cheap anymore.

The sensors are part of the valve stem. If you didn't install them on your 20's, then the system wont work & you'll always have the light on. If you keep your stock wheels in your garage or near your parking spot, it will pick up the signal if they are nearby, making the light go out when you first start up.

I have 22's on mine & the light just stays on. Cheaper than buying 4 new sensor/valve stem assemblies. Not sure if there is a way to disable the system. I hope there is .... it's annoying.

Best way to find out if you have sensors in your truck is to follow this process here. Check post #2 and follow the steps, if not you will have to search online: Ebay, amazon, etc. for a pair and have them installed in your tires which means having all 4 go through the mount n' balance procedure. Unless you dont mind riding around with the light and message on.

I am going to guess you are running Toyo Open Country M/T, either way, though the tires specifiy 50psi max, anyone here with oversize tires will tell you, your ride will ride extremely rough. I am running from 40-42psi on mine, it varies depending outside temperature and how much ive been on the road. Also read this thread in which another individual discuss about tire pressure recommandation for these tires.

I doubt you can but post #8 mentions it can be done through a computer, but not legally.

Hope this helps
