2009 Sierra Check Engine Light Codes

The check engine light came on in a friends brand new 2009 Sierra extended cab with 5.3L Flex fuel and 4 spd auto. Is there a way to determine the code without a code reader? I know in my Jeep Liberty I can turn the ignition on and off in a certain sequence and the code displays on the message

Not on a GM anymore. If you have an autozone in your area they will scan for free.

No way to read codes. Your friends truck is under warranty so have hime take it in to the dealer.

It's under warranty. take it to the dealer for a free fix.
