I am looking to rebuild the rear on my 2000 sierra 1500. I know it is a pain but I want to start collecting the bits and pieces. I am looking to get a torsen Diff since they cost the same as a posi and are supposed to last longer on the street without all the clutch wear.

Now, anybody know what the length of the axles is for the rear?

I have the 8.6 with disc brakes and do not want to get covered in gear oil and need new seals just to measure the axle length.

Just go buy an Eaton mech locker

The G80, from all posi chevy 10-bolts.

 

The Torsen is a little to be desired...its not bad, but it sure isn't as good as a G80. Also there are no clutches to worry about in the Eaton (G80) unit.

I like the Torsen diff over the grenade 80 myself. As far as the OP's question about axle length... I don't get it. There should be an application chart for the Torsen for the 10 bolt.

The topic of many arguments.

 

I have a friend with 900 RW ft-lbs in his avalanche still spinning the stock 10-bolt with zero upgrade....3 years and counting now.

Of course, if your building a performance rear end your not gonna build a 10-bolt either...I do like the engagement of the G80 way more than the Torsen, and also....Fords use Torsen...so nuts to that.

 

And yeah your right, there should be no need to have any measurements other than the ring gear, and spline count.

I already know it has 30 spline axles, about the strongest you can get for a 10 bolt and plenty strong for a couple hundred hp. I want to make sure I get the correct Length axles so that they fit and do not have the bearing surfaces sitting in the wrong spot.

 

Second, the limited slip/locker does not work above 25 mph and the posi units can get toasted when dealing with water, snow and ice on the street. They can still lose grip, I want a rear that grips and will last.

 

Lockers are either on or off and can be a pain if the wheels are different diameters, my choice but I want a rear that is proven to work in any condition and last. Posi's are out for my truck, I want a rear that powers both wheels and won't leave me spinning because it wore out.

Ok so your buying new axles than??? Why...its not like they wear out.

 

You need Torsen P/N 975420-0840B...new seals and bearings and your done...unless your gears are bad...than you need a whole rear diff kit.

 

Why would you have different diameter wheels on your truck anyway...

I don't Have different size tire on purpose but even new tires can have slightly different diameters.

On a side note. I had a good rear from a car that was quiet and the axle bearings made no noise. However, when restoring the car I pulled the axles to put in new bearings and seals and maybe a loc-right locker to the open rear until I was surprised. the shafts were pitted on the bearing surfaces and were useless.

I am going to replace the axles to keep from having this problem. I do not have the best luck and have found problems with the truck that were not problems until hit by the light of day.

axle length is 33 9/16 inches. 33.65 is the longest axles that would fit into 8.6 10 bolt rear with a true trace carrier.
