02 Sierra 1500 Hub Assembly Stuck

Recommended Posts

I am currently trying to replace the hub assembly on my 02 Sierra 1500 I've got everything torndorn. All I need to do now is get the hub assembly out. The Haynes manual says not to pull to hard because you could mess up the bearings in the cv joint or something like that. Anyway it appears to be stuck pretty good I tried tapping on it with a hammer, however had no luck. Do they make some sort of puller or what is the best way to free a stubborn hub assembly?

Thanks

You removed the bolts from the back of the hub and the hub-axle nut?

What I have had to do before is break the axle loose from inside the hub first. I use my air hammer with a point bit and it fits inside the little dimple in the axle shaft. But I have had to beat on it before with a hammer. If you have another nut thread that on and hit the axle with a hammer, otherwise you risk screwing up the threads on the shaft. You could find a gear puller large enough to push the axle out too.

Once you get the axle loose, as long as you are replacing the hub, beat the back of the hub to rotor flange with a maul. It doesn't matter if you mess that up since you are replacing it. I have never heard of it messing up the CV joints by hitting the hub. They do make an adapter for slide hammers to remove hubs so maybe you could rent a slide hammer and that adapter.

Hope this helps.
