2010 Silverado Bluetooth Upgrade

Recommended Posts

I know 2007 and 2008 trucks have the Gen 7 On* VCIM and people upgraded to a bluetooth VCIM and have bluetooth but no On*. I`ve seen hundreds of threads on this and very few people can get both(bluetooth and Green On* light). on those years. I was wondering if the Gen 8 Onstar bluetooth VCIM on the 09 and 10 models is just plug and play w/ no Tech 2 programming or is their all kinds of issues w/ trying to get both bluetooth and a green On* light to work on the new trucks(09,10)

I have the same question. There are many many threads on this, and it is difficult to come up with a final answer of what/how to do it. Would it be possible to make a sticky and have the most up to date info on it? Thanks

Indeed it is possible; by this weekend I'll get it posted; I've been holding off on posting the info I've had assembled for quite a while now because I was waiting to see if I could get OnStar working first, and I'm making another attempt at it on Friday. Regardless of the outcome, I'll post what I've got.

In the meantime, to address the question about '09-10 trucks: it is highly unlikely that you'll find OnStar to be plug-and-play, however the programming process for a 2009 or 2010 truck is straight forward and shouldn't be a problem like it is for the earlier trucks.

I have a 2010 Silverado and just bought a 20783877 from the Michigan eBay seller. I paid quite a bit for it...hoping it works properly. I've been reading for hours but can't find any info about installing this VCIM in a 2010.

Installing it in a 2010 is no different than installing it in a 2007-09. The ONLY difference is that you should easily be able to have it programmed by a GM dealer and get OnStar activated.

After physically installing the module just head to your dealer and tell them you need to have a VCIM setup and OnStar activation performed -- it should be able to be done without any issues since the software for a 2010 truck with Bluetooth is already available and 100% compatible.

That's good to know because I allowed myself to be suckered into the sellers sales pitch ("I only have 2 left and when there gone I will not be getting any more") and paid quite a bit more than some on here have reported. Since this is a brand new truck, I'd really like for everything to function as it should...even though I probably won't renew ONStar after the included first year :happysad:

Anyone been dealing with any service departments in the Tampa area? I'd prefer to not be a guinea pig

this is relevant to my interests.

I never use onstar tho and don't care to have it.. Can I just buy a module plug it in and not have to have it reprogrammed if I don't want onstar?

Just rereading what you wrote...I know there have been issues with pre-'09 installations since these vehicles never came from the factory with Bluetooth...but what software compatibility are you referring to?

Do you mean the software in the computer that the dealership uses to configure the module?

I think he means the module you have has pre programmed software for 09 and 10 trucks

and thats why people w/ 07 and 08 are having problems. Keep us updated on how the programming goes at the dealer and what they charge you, Thanks

Okay...I guess I just don't quite understand how the module would be able to determine the vehicle in which it's installed. Hopefully, the 20783877 module I purchased is the proper part number for a 2010 installation.

I'm traveling so it'll be a few weeks before I have the opportunity to bring it to a dealership.

You def. have the right part, that part will work in any 2007-10 for the bluetooth ONLY, getting the Onstar to work in the 07 and 08 seems to be the problem. I really haven`t seen anyone w/ a 09 or 10 post they they have both Onstar and bluetooth, hopefuly your the first, Good luck. PS Make sure you also have the antenna, most people sell them separate from the VCIM

Yes -- I'm talking about the software used by OnStar and the TIS2WEB software the dealership uses for configuration. Since the physical part you're installing is the proper recognized hardware that GM uses in 2010 trucks, the OnStar system and TIS2WEB are going to see the hardware information paired with the vehicle information and know what to load in order to make it work.

The reason our pre-'09 installations have been having issues is that these same systems see the hardware information from our '09+ modules paired with a pre-'09 vehicle and as a default reaction say "WTF?"

Truth be told, you might even be able to have OnStar do everything you need them to do as far as programming/activating your new module remotely without any dealer intervention -- just press the blue button and when they answer, tell them you replaced the VCIM and need them to re-activate it to your account.
